On the season, Shortell saw action in seven games, throwing for 853 yard six touchdowns and five interceptions. A pocket passer, Shortell was never a perfect fit for Jerry Kill's zone-read offense which relied heavily on the mobility of the quarterback. At 6-foot-6 and 235 pounds, Shortell rumbled for just 48 total rushing yards on 34 attempts this season.
Kill released a short statement on Shortell's departure when the news was announced.
"Max is an outstanding young man, and I respect and understand his decision to transfer," he said. "I will help him in any way I can and wish him all the best as he continues his education and football career elsewhere."
Shortell also issued a statement of his own via his Twitter account.
"Thanks to all the Minnesota people that supported me," he wrote. "I loved it here, hate to leave, but it's my best option. Best of luck to Gopher nation."
