Injury Breakdown: Week 3

We take a look at the current injury situation for Minnesota and see what type of impact it will have in the current and future weeks

Here is a breakdown of the injuries currently on Minnesota's Football Roster and what effect it could have in this week's matchup against New Mexico State and against future opponents:

RB: Donnell Kirkwood and Berkley Edwards. Both Kirkwood and Edwards are out again this week, both with ankle sprains. The staff is hopeful to have Kirkwood back by next week's game against San Jose State, but after seeing him hobbling around campus that seems doubtful. With Edwards the staff seems to be leaning on the side of caution as they are in no hurry to get him onto the field unless he is healthy. These injuries shouldn't have an impact on this weeks game but it would be nice to have them both for San Jose State and it could be a strugle to get by without them against Iowa.

LT: Ed Olson is out once again. While Marek Lenkiewicz has played well in his backup role redshirt freshman Ben Lauer has made a strong push in practice to unseat him. If the staff plans on playing Lauer in a bigger role, it would make sense to get him on the field against an FCS opponent instead of next week's opponent San Jose State, who won eleven games last year. It will be tough for Olson to regain his starting role if he does regain his health.

OLB: Nick Rallis will again sit out. It was reported that he has been battling Mono. While his absence shouldn't have a large impact in the game against the Leathernecks, if he is unable to go against the Spartans, they could expose the lack of depth at outside linebacker.

CB: Briean Boddy-Calhoun is unfortunately out for the season after starting the first two games of the 2013 campaign. This is a big blow to the secondary, but the unit is deep. The biggest potential impact it could have is that it could force the Gophers to pull the redshirt off of Jalen Myrick. While Myrick looked good in fall camp, the Gophers would be better served to have him redshirt and get a full four years of production out of him. The injury to Boddy-Calhoun also puts pressure on Derrick Wells to regain his form from last year after playing sparingly last week and sitting out the opener. Boddy-Calhoun's fellow JUCO transfer DB's from a couple of years ago will also be asked to step up as will converted WR Marcus Jones.
