Whitfield "Stoked" About Gopher Offer

Spiro (OK.) junior safety McKinley Whitfield is seeing his recruitment pick up and added his first B1G offer when the Minnesota Gophers pulled the trigger and offered on Monday

Minnesota has a very veteran staff, but they recently had a missing piece to their coaching staff puzzle when linebacker coach Bart Miller left to Florida State for the same position earlier this year. In came new linebacker coach Mike Sherels and he has shown he will be a force to be reckon with on the recruiting trail with the amount of time he has put in and impact he has made on various prospects like with the latest offeree Spiro (OK.) junior safety McKinley Whitfield.

"Coach Sherels had called me before he was coming down and told me basically that they were very interested in me," Whitfield told GopherDigest. "When we started talking yesterday at my school, right out of the jump he let me know that they were going to offer me. I mean it felt great to be getting a Big Ten offer! I was stoked about it!"

"I don't really know too much about them yet because I didn't expect them to even be looking at me like that. I just like how they were so straight up with me. I'm interested in them about just like everybody else. I don't really have a list of my top schools or anything like that. I am thinking about visiting Minnesota though."

The 6-3, 190-pound athletic safety has seen a spike in his recruitment and talks about the latest developments in it.

"I have offers from Tulsa, Missouri State, Arkansas State, Navy, Army and Minnesota," said Whitfield. "I am also hearing from Oregon State, Oklahoma, Arizona State and Memphis. My recruitment is going good I guess. Some days it is fast and then some it is really slow (laughter), but I am going day by day."
