The Gopher defense last season increased in most categories defensively and they are looking to make another stride. The way continue that postive progress comes on the recruiting trail and finding guys that fit what they are searching for. Secondary coach Jay Sawvel has been keeping tabs on Morganza (LA.) Pointe Coupee Central senior outside linebacker Bryce Jones and now the versatile prospect has plans to head to Minneapolis soon.
“I have heard from Minnesota,” Jones told GopherDigest. “I have talked to Coach Sawvel and they are just talking about me coming out there for the BBQ and camp! They said I am really impressive. They also said they are ready for me to be a Gopher.”
The 6-2, 205-pound linebacker holds a few offers at the moment, but hasn’t landed one from the Gophers. If they were to offer him, Jones know it would be huge especially with his tie to the program.
“No, I don’t have an offer yet,” said Jones. “I have some interest in them since my step mom works there at the university, so it helps a lot. She tells me every other day to be a Gopher. I told her it depends on how fast they offer me and how much interest they have in me. It would mean a lot (if they offered) because that would be a BIG offer. It would mean so much to me and my community.”
Jones will be up at Minneapolis soon to check out the program and meet the coaches, but has a message to the Gopher fans before he heads up there.
“Tell them that if I’m a Gopher, I’m going to leave it all on the line for them and don’t be surprised to see me wearing the number 3 out there in the next four years,” said Jones. “Let’s go win this conference championship.”
