There was a point in time that Minnesota didn’t know if their prized signee in Minneapolis (MN.) Washburn running back Jeffrey Jones would be on campus in the fall. That doubt was changed to positivity as Jones posted on his Facebook he got great news recently that he got accepted into the school. He is definitely a special player and will be someone the staff looks to use often.
The 6-0, 190-pound tailback was the No. 12 running back and a four star recruit by Scout. He held offers from Florida, Illinois, Iowa, Iowa State, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State, Syracuse and Wisconsin. He was the top player in Minnesota and that was no shocker as he compiled 2,460 all purpose yards and 44 touchdowns during his senior season.
The Gophers backfield cupboard was full even if Jones wasn’t coming in this fall with 1,000 yard rusher David Cobb, Donnell Kirkwood, Rodrick Williams and Berkley Edwards all returning. They also brought in Rodney Smith, who signed with the 2014 recruiting class. While there is a lot of bodies this year, that will dwindle next season as both Cobb and Kirkwood will be gone to graduation.
Here is our Allen Trieu’s evaluation of Jones- “Jones has solid size and is a fine athlete. He's a slasher with great burst, cutback ability and a feel for the run game. He has good elusiveness, but can also run with power. He also has the frame to get stronger and bigger. He does not necessarily have home-run, elite speed, but his acceleration and other skills make up for that. He is also a good pass receiver.”
