Minnesota has found success in the Great Lake State recently and secured a commitment from Southfield (MI.) senior cornerback Ray Buford. The Gopher coaching staff has targeted his teammate in senior safety Dior Johnson, who is currently committed to Wake Forest and offered him earlier this month. He recaps his official visit to Winston-Salem and his upcoming official to Minneapolis.
“This past weekend I just came off my visit to Wake Forest and it went pretty well,” Johnson told GopherDigest. “I talked to (Head) Coach (Dave) Clawson and a couple of the coaches from the coaching staff. They were a pretty nice group of guys. I got around the guys and asked them a couple of questions I needed to know and then they kind of answered the question I needed. I would say it is a pretty good fit for me at Wake Forest. I am going on a visit this weekend to Minnesota to just compare the schools and see what I really want to do. I just want to make sure I make the right decision.”
Minnesota tight end coach Rob Reeves and secondary coach Jay Sawvel has double teamed the recruitment of the athletic 6-2, 195-pound defensive back. The No. 36 ranked safety and a three star recruit by Scout gives his thoughts on his take to play at the next level with his high school teammate and Gopher commit, Ray Buford.
“I am right now talking to Coach Sawvel and Coach Reeves,” said Johnson. “They just really want to get me down to see the campus and get around the guys, so I can get a feel for the campus. That is where I stand with Minnesota, but then again one of my teammates in Ray Buford is committed. It would be a nice feel to kind of play with one of my guys from Southfield.”
When Johnson does sit down to either stay committed as a Demon Deacon or flip to another school, what would be the main factors he plans in taking into consideration?“The main factors for me will be of course getting on the field early,” said Johnson. “I want to make sure I get on the field and the coaching staff and make sure I get a good stable coaching staff where I can build a bond with. Last thing is the players and I want to build a bond with the players too.”
