The Gophers received some big news before practice today when Eden Prairie (MN.) junior linebacker Carter Coughlin pledged to Minnesota. He becomes the second commit in their 2016 recruiting class and in-state commit joining East Ridge defensive tackle Jojo Garcia.
The 6-4, 200-pound Coughlin chose the Gophers over his other finalists in Ohio State and Oregon. He also held offers from Iowa, Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin. He sits as the No. 16 outside linebacker in the nation and a four star recruit by Scout.
Coughlin has established a great bond with the Gopher coaching staff and grew up liking the Minnesota very much. One of those coaches he has built a strong relationship with is linebacker coach Mike Sherels and he was quoted a couple months ago saying, “He is so awesome. I love his coaching style that is really more of a teacher. He is young, energetic and doesn’t do too much yelling.”
Coughlin is a very versatile prospect that has the potential to play multiple positions at the next level. He brings good length, very aggressive and a great football IQ. Huge in-state get to keep him home.
