One of the top signal callers from Iowa traveled up to Minneapolis to watch the Gophers spring practice recently in Mount Pleasant (IA.) junior quarterback Joe Hess. He recaps his time at Minnesota and what all he got to do.
“It went great,” Hess told GopherDigest. “We toured the weight room and got a rundown on how how the strength and conditioning works there. We then got to sit through a film session with the quarterback coach and their quarterbacks and wide receivers. After, we went to the field and watched the team practice and during the practice, I got to spend the whole practice talking to (Director of Recruiting Operations) Coach (Billy) Glasscock, which was fun.”
The 6-5, 205-pound Hess has seen his recruitment pick up, but has yet to earn that first offer. Still, he is working hard to land that first offer and would love if it came from the Gophers, but knows it will take a good showing at Minnesota’s camp this summer in order for that to happen.
“(Coach Glasscock) talked to me about the team and stuff,” said Hess. “He just got to know me more and he shared the importance of going to camp during the summer because he told me Coach Kill in all of his years hardly ever has made an offer to a quarterback without seeing them throwing at camp, so if I want to get an offer, I’d definitely have to go to camp. It’s very important to them to see their quarterback recruits throw in person.”
With Hess’s visit to Minnesota in the books, how interested is he in the Gophers and what would an offer from them mean as well?
“I’m very interested,” said Hess. “I definitely could see myself going there. I absolutely plan on camping there as well. (If Minnesota offered) it would mean a lot! It would definitely be an honor if it happened.”
Hess plans to attend Iowa’s spring practice this Saturday, then Northern Iowa on April 18th and back to Iowa for their spring game on the 25th.
