Cross names the Gophers his leader

Minnesota has had a strong presence in Alabama since head coach Jerry Kill and staff arrived in the Twin Cities and things look to stay that way as the Gopher staff offered New Market (Ala.) Buckhorn defensive tackle Ja'quize Cross last week. GopherDigest caught up with the Alabama defensive tackle to learn more about his Minnesota interest.

"I've heard from Minnesota, Mississippi State, Vanderbilt and Georgia lately," Cross told GopherDigest.com. "Minnesota offered me last week and the other three schools are talking with me about camp. I camped at Kentucky last weekend and I'll be heading to Mississippi State and Georgia soon."

Cross knows a lot about his new Big Ten offer here early on.

"Coach Sawvel actually offered me on Thursday and we had a chance to talk for awhile that night," Cross explained. "We talked about coming up there to visit and we also talked earlier last week about the school and what they're doing there. Also about the new facilities they're building. He told me how they're going to sign one more defensive tackle this year and they want me to be it as he loves my size and explosion. He also said they'll be hosting the Super Bowl up there soon and we also talked about an official visit. I know some here early on, such as I know they won 18 conference titles and they're in the Big Ten. I'm definitely thinking about that official visit in the fall."

Minnesota now leads for the Alabama defensive tackle and the Gophers have another connection to the school.

"Minnesota is number one on my list," Cross told GopherDigest.com. "It's a great school and great program and I know I can do big things there. The distance is okay for me, but my mom is kind of worried about it. I'm good friends with Khari Blasingame and I know he was committed there. He's told me it's a good school and program, but not much other than that. I don't know when I'm going to commit yet, but when I do commit, it won't be public until signing day. I just want to keep everyone guessing until then, but Minnesota has a good shot with me."
