Is Calais the next RB offer for Minnesota?

Minnesota has been extremely active in the state of Louisiana over the last few years and that remains the same for the 2016 class as Cecilia (La.) running back Raymond Calais has heard from the Gophers daily. GopherDigest caught up with Calais to learn more about recruiting.

"I've heard from Minnesota, Southeastern, Tulane, Memphis and ULL lately," Calais said to GopherDigest. "They haven't offered yet as I have to go to their camps and run the 40. They only want to see my run so I'll be making trips to those places in a few days, expect for Minnesota as that's too far to go on my own. Southern Miss, McNeese State and Nicholls State offered so far. I have a camp at ULL on July 13th and the others soon after that."

Minnesota has been showing a lot of interest in the Cecilia athlete.

"We talk everyday," Calais said about the Minnesota coaches. "Coach Sawvel tells me they are really interested in me and that we're setting up a date so I can catch a few balls as they want to see how I catch. If they do offer me, I'll play both running back and slot receiver there. Sawvel wants my coach to film me catching passes out of the backfield and slot and that'll probably happen next week as my quarterback in on vacation until then. Sawvel said their offense needs more explosion and more speed. So I'll be doing fly sweeps, catching the ball and all sorts of things there. I'm definitely willing to do it and am actually excited about it. I don't have a problem with it."

Calais has been working hard on recovering from injury and in the weight room.

"The past spring I sat out due to a tweaked hamstring for the high school state meet and that hamstring really slowed down my recruiting process," Calais told GopherDigest. "The recovery is going great and it's gotten much stronger and I'm happy with it. That's why I'll be running the 40 at every camp I go to now. I've ran the 100 under 11 seconds since I was a freshman, so I was disappointed with the state meet, but it is what it is. I'm really working hard on improving with catching the ball and really been hitting the weight room hard. I didn't catch that many passes this past year and most colleges are recruiting me to play running back and in the slot, plus I need to gain weight. I'm trying to get to 180/185 and I'm 172 now. My expectations for this upcoming season are of course I want to break records, but that will come. I have to be a better leader on and off the field and everything else will fall into place."

A Minnesota offer could be a game changer for Calais.

"It would be such an honor," Calais said about a potential Minnesota offer. "It would be big and it'd be my first Big 10 offer. I would extremely happy about it, plus I like the cold weather. I play better for some reason in the cold as in our playoff game this past season, I rushed for over 300 yards on 29 carries with three touchdowns and it was freezing then. I'm not in a rush to make a decision as I want to take all five visits and get to know the coaches and see the campus. Then my family and I will make a decision on signing day."
