Maple Grove (Minn.) power forward Reed Nikko has been on a roll lately in his recruiting picking up offers from Minnesota and Iowa in recent days and GopherDigest caught up with Nikko to learn more.
"I've received offers from Minnesota, Iowa and Miami (Oh.) in the last few days," Nikko said. "Iowa offered last night and I spoke with Coach Francis last night, but he gave the phone to the head coach to offer. He just spoke for awhile about the program and how they do things and that my style of play could fit in there and just very complimentary. Miami's assistant coach contacted me on Sunday saying the head coach would call and he did last night to offer me."
The Gophers deciding to offer Nikko may pay huge dividends.
"Pitino called me in between flights back from the UAA camp, but my phone was still in my bag, so he sent a text saying that they were offering," Nikko explained to GopherDigest.com. "I called him as soon as I saw the text to thank him and he said then that they want to the in-state recruits and that he thought that I could help the program. It means a lot to me for Minnesota to offer because they're the home town team and that it's a high major Big Ten school. My mom was very happy about the offer as it's her alma mater, so I think she was pretty excited. All that being said, she told me she wants me to go to the best situation for me. I don't know how I'd exactly fit in to the Gophers system, but I feel like with my skill set, I would be a good asset on defense for them. I've really been working on my offensive moves this summer and also put on more weight. I feel more my balanced inside and I just have played with a lot more confidence because of that. I'm up to 235 and I was at like 215 a year ago."
Despite the recent offers, the Maple Grove forward wants to keep things open for awhile.
"I'm very interested in both Iowa and Minnesota because of the level of academics and the level of ball both offer as well. I don't have a time table or anything like that as of now as I'm open to everyone. I'll definitely be taking some officials because a decision and Minnesota will most likely get one yes."
