ALERT: 3 true freshmen to play for Minnesota

Gophers head coach Jerry Kill has said recently that three true freshmen in Julian Huff, KiAnte Hardin and Shannon Brooks will play snaps for Minnesota this fall. GopherDigest.com's Ryan Burns discusses this with Scout's Amy Campbell.

Minnesota Football head coach Jerry Kill has gone on record recently saying that three true freshmen will definitely be seeing the field this fall is linebacker Julian Huff, cornerback KiAnte Hardin and running back Shannon Brooks.

True freshman linebacker Julian Huff has been nothing except impressive since he steps on campus in January and has climbed his way up the depth chart all the way to second string. Huff has been extremely explosive and shown great instincts and maturity for a guy of his age.

“Julian will play for us, ain’t no doubt about that,” Kill said. “He adds depth on special teams. He can do a lot of different things in some of our packages we put together. He’s a good player.”

Webb City (Mo.) athlete KiAnte Hardin came in as one of the under the radar players in the 2015 class, but he's raised eyebrows since he stepped on campus. Hardin has been saying the most meaningful reps of all the true freshmen defensive back class and he's even drawn praise from his position coach.

"He has a good feel for the game," Defensive backs coach Jay Sawvel said yesterday. "He has a lot of instinct. He runs very, very well. He's a competitive guy. We definitely like what we’ve seen."

On the Sports Huddle with Sid and Dave on Sunday, Kill said RB Shannon Brooks "is going to be a guy that's going to play for us as a freshman." That's no surprise to anyone who has seen the work Brooks has been putting in, especially at Minnesota's scrimmage on Saturday.

“He’s pretty tough isn’t he?” Kill mentioned after the Gophers scrimmage Saturday. “He runs pretty hard. I’ve got to go watch the film to see if he’ll block anybody or not, but he’s hard to tackle. And we figured that when we recruited him. You don’t rush for all those yards he did and not be a good back.”
