"I got a call from my recruiting coach Rob Reeves and head coach Jerry Kill on Tuesday night and that's when Minnesota offered," Arkeem Byrd said to GopherDigest.com. "Coach Reeves and I talked for a little bit and he handed the phone over to Coach Kill who is the one that actually offered me. He said that he loved me on film and the offer is at either side of the ball. We'd figure that out later, but all he knows is that they want an athlete like me at Minnesota. They liked how I made a jump from my junior to senior film and Coach Reeves had been telling me to stay patient for awhile as they really liked me and it finally happened that night with an offer. It's great."
Byrd knows a current Minnesota player who is also from Savannah.
"I've known Jalen Myrick for awhile now," Byrd explained. "We played against each other when he was a senior and we've talked since he's been at college. He said it's a great place up there at Minnesota and the social life is awesome. One of his old coaches is actually someone that I've trained with, so I'm familiar."
The Gophers are sitting well with the Georgia athlete following the offer.
"I'd say Minnesota is up there for me now and that's a big offer," Byrd told GopherDigest. "They're probably number one or number two for me with the offer. I'm really looking at just visiting Minnesota before I make a decision here. Coach Kill and I talked about me coming up there to visit, but we haven't set anything yet. I'll just want to make a decision after I visit Minnesota as I'm not looking at visiting anywhere else. That's likely when a decision will come."
