CB Elijah Battle ready to start his Gopher career

Dodge City (Kan.) C.C. cornerback and new Minnesota signee Elijah Battle is the latest Gopher to sign in the 2016 class and he went in-depth with GopherDigest.com to share more about his reasons to sign with Minnesota.

GopherDigest.com: What is your current height and weight? What weight would the Minnesota staff like you to report at in a few weeks?

EB: I'm about 6'0" and 185 pounds and the staff has told me to expect to gain about 10 pounds once I get on campus.

GopherDigest.com: What are your individual and team goals you hope to accomplish during your college career?

EB: My individual goals are that I want to be all Big-Ten and as a team, I want to win the Big Ten championship and win a bowl game.

GopherDigest.com: What are you looking to work on the most this spring to prepare yourself for Big Ten football?

EB: I'm looking forward to continuing to learn from Coach Sawvel on how to read defenses correctly and learn how to get better out of my breaks and all that.

GopherDigest.com: What future moment are you looking forward to the most as a Golden Gopher?

EB: Thing I'm looking forward to most is just winning with the team. Winning is really important to me and I'm excited for the winning culture.

GopherDigest.com: What was the main reason you chose to attend the University of Minnesota?

EB: It was the best opportunity for me and I needed to chase that dream. The staff was great and made me feel comfortable there.

GopherDigest.com: What team do you want to beat the most as a Gopher and why?

EB: Rutgers. I'm from New Jersey, so it's close to home.

GopherDigest.com: Is there any unfinished academic business or are you all set to enroll at Minnesota?

EB: All set.

GopherDigest.com: If you don't make it to the NFL, where do you see yourself in 10 years?

EB: I want to either own some kind of a sports business or become a lawyer.

GopherDigest.com: What is it about Coach Claeys and the coaching staff that makes you want to play for them?

EB: Actually, it was what their current players told me on my official visit. They were telling me about how they really respect the staff and how they always practice hard. That's the kind of environment I want to be in.

GopherDigest.com: What is something you learned about the University of Minnesota that surprised you during the recruiting process?

EB: I guess I would say that it's not cold all the time, but I'm from New Jersey anyway and we have all four seasons as well. Cold doesn't bother me one bit.

GopherDigest.com: What position do you expect to play at Minnesota? What other position did the Gopher staff mention as a possibility?

EB: The coaching staff has told me that I'll be coming into play boundary corner for them. That's all they've said.

GopherDigest.com: What have the coaches told you regarding how they plan to utilize your strengths as a player?

EB: Coach Sawvel has told me that he'll be working with me on my strengths and turn them into even bigger assets and that we'll work on my weaknesses and make me a complete corner.

GopherDigest.com: Have you had any communication with other Minnesota recruits and if so what?

EB: I haven't since I was on my official visit.

GopherDigest.com: What player do you model your game after and why?

EB: I'd say a mixture between Deion Sanders and Tyrann Mathieu. Love the way Deion played out there and the same with the Honey Badger.
