January 29th official visit primer

With only 5 days left until National Signing Day, Minnesota is hosting a few very important official visitors. Here's what you need to know.

Details: With just a few days left until National Signing Day, Minnesota is currently hosting Alabama defensive back Daniel Thomas on a 36 hour official visit to the Twin Cities. Defensive Coordinator Jay Sawvel has been recruiting Thomas since the spring and brings him up here on an official visit now as he's guy that the Gophers can't pass on if Thomas wants to be here. Thomas will leave tonight for an official visit to Auburn and if the Tigers offer, it's game over for Minnesota's chances here. If they don't however, it'll be an interesting few days before signing day.

Details: DeMarcus Williams arrives on campus later this morning with his mother and cousin and the Gophers will be doing what they can to try and get the Alabama quarterback locked down. Offensive coordinator / quarterback's coach Jay Johnson was down to see Williams yesterday and after taking an official visit to Tulane on Wednesday, Minnesota hopes this will be Williams' last stop. Gophers would really like the Jackson quarterback to jump on board becoming their second quarterback of the 2016 class with Seth Green.

In his words: "Coach Johnson came by yesterday morning and just told me to be safe when I come up and to enjoy the visit. My mom and cousin will be with. I'm looking forward to see what the weather will be like and to seeing the stadium and facilities. I'm excited!"

Details: TaMarion Johnson arrives on campus Saturday with his mother and father, plus his high school coach as well as the recent Miami (Oh.) decommit tries to determine if Minnesota is the best fit for him. Johnson was schedule to also visit Iowa State this weekend, but sources have told GopherDigest that the visit is off and as of right now, Minnesota is the only visit scheduled for Johnson, which bodes well for the Gophers chances as they try to land the top 100 defensive end.

Details: Preferred walk-on on defensive back target Calvin Swenson will arrive on campus later today at the University of Minnesota as Jay Sawvel tries to add some more depth to his 2016 defensive back core. Swenson was a standout at the Gophers' camps this summer and that eventually led to Minnesota extended a preferred walk-on offer. Wisconsin also recently extended a PWO offer to their in-state DB, but Swenson chose to visit Minnesota this weekend instead of the Badgers.

Details: PWO kicker candidate John Mack arrives on campus later today and he chose to take this official visit over other PWO offers from Iowa State and Bowling Green. Minnesota brings in Mack on an official visit as it looks like current kicker Ryan Santoso may be getting a serious look at punter with the graduation of Peter Mortell. Mack is currently rated the 12th best kicker in the country by Kohl's Kicking, so this would be a pretty good get for Gophers.
