There has been much debate about the 2017 class of talent in Minnesota being the best ever. Is it? That’s debatable (2009 is tough to beat). But 2017 is one of the best and GI catches you up on what schools are after all the 2017 Minnesota prospects and we will do it from a Gopher perspective.
McKinley Wright of Champlin Park. I think Wright has set the record for the most interviews done by a recruit ever this year and what are they saying? Minnesota and Dayton are the favorites and will get the first two visits. Visits are also set up to Memphis and Xavier and those will be taken if McKinley, or the schools, get that far without a commitment. Minnesota has a strong chance with Wright, but so does Dayton.
Jericho Sims of Cristo Rey Jesuit. We know two things about Jericho right now, he will visit Texas officially and he will visit Minnesota some time in September. After that everything seems up in the air. There is a long list of programs that are after Sims right now but until any of them set up a visit you have to consider this Minnesota and Texas.
Theo John of Champlin Park. Maybe the most thoroughly planned out recruitment I’ve seen. Spaced his visits out perfectly with one to Oklahoma last winter, one to Purdue after the school year, another to Marquette in the late summer, and then visits to Cal and Minnesota to start the school year. The choice will come after that. Marquette wants three bigs in this class (has one so far) but didn’t watch him as much as others in July, Oklahoma and Cal had assistants at most his games with an occasional appearance from head coach, Minnesota seems to want him the most as Richard Pitino was at nearly everything he did.
The Offers that went Elsewhere
Nathan Reuvers of Lakeville North. A top 100 prospect that wanted Notre Dame, it never came so Reuvers took Wisconsin instead and rubbed it in the nose of Gopher fans immediately in the press.
Brad Davison of Maple Grove. Gophers offers offered very late but at this point he was pretty much off the board as he committed to Wisconsin that next week.
Gary Trent Jr of Apple Valley (now Findlay Prep). Let the world know that he was going to an elite program fast so the Gophs never really continued to pursue him. Down to Duke, UCLA, Michigan State, Arizona, Kentucky with most locals believing it will be Duke or UCLA.
Talent Looked At
Goanar Mar of DeLaSalle. Goanar was one of many that Minnesota brought in on unofficial visits and went to watch over the past three years but decided not to offer. Goanar has recently committed to George Mason. Earned double figure D1 offers including four high majors before deciding on George Mason.
Simon Wright of Hopkins. Simon earned a Providence offer when he was really young and was on the Gopher campus several times as a freshman and sophomore. This year he earned double figure D1 offers and picked Elon after a number of visits.
Trae Berhow of Watertown-Mayer. Berhow had a couple Minnesota views with the coaches watching in the past. He recently narrowed his list to Pepperdine, St. Joseph’s, Northern Illinois, Drake, Pacific, and Boston U and has decided on four visits which will be to Pepperdine, Northern Illinois, Boston U, and Pacific over four straight weekends.
Myles Hanson of Chaska. The Gophs watched him a few times seeing his explosive finishing and 25 points per game at the high level of Class AAAA basketball. Myles has earned himself five D1 offers this year and right now has Drake, Pepperdine, and Columbia as the teams he will visit.
Ishmael El-Amin of Hopkins. The son of Khalid El-Amin recently added offers from Tennessee State, Ball State, and Denver U and he told us recently that he would like to try and set up visits with them and schools that previously offered which would be Nevada and DePaul.
Isaac Johnson of Minneapolis North. Isaac has been invited to a couple Gopher games in the past. Isaac will visit Western Illinois at the end of September. He also said Siena and UWGB are interested.
Jack Sorenson of Lakeville South. Jack has earned six D1 offers over the years although right now nothing has been set up for visits this fall and of those offers most of them have filled his spot.
Jordan Horn of Tartan. Horn has offers from South Dakota, New Hampshire, and Western Carolina.
Weston Baker Magrath of Marshall. Just added an offer from North Dakota.
Jack Hutchison of Maple Grove. Offers from Sam Houston State and Montana State.
Alec Loehr of Rosemount. Has offers from Army and Navy plus a couple Ivy League schools are interested.
Luke Loehr of Rosemount. Has offers from Army and Navy plus a couple Ivy League schools are interested.
Rocky Kreuser of Totino-Grace. Offered by North Dakota State
Tyler Riemersma of Bloomington Jefferson. Offer from Navy
