Pregame

Minnesota and Florida State are playing for the fourth time in five years.  Richard Pitino is 2-0 coaching against Leonard Hamilton so far with both wins coming during the 2013-14 season…Minnesota was without Reggie Lynch on Friday because of an ankle injury but Reggie is healthy tonight and will be in the starting line-up…Lynch will be joined by Nate Mason, Dupree McBrayer, Amir Coffey, and Jordan Murphy in Coach Pitino’s normal starting five.  Florida State has started 6-4 Xavier Rathan-Mayes at lead guard, 6-6 Terance Mann and 6-7 Dwayne Bacon at wing, 6-10 Jonathan Isaac at power forward, and 7-1 Michael Ojo at center.   FSU plays 11 guys routinely while Minnesota plays seven regularly with Ahmad Gilbert usually being the 8th man.  FSU only uses Ojo for a dozen minute game as he is replaced by two other centers with Trent Forrest quickly rotating with the wings…

First Half

Looks like Coffey is on Isaac, Murphy on Mann, and McBrayer on Bacon.  Coffey couldn’t box out Isaac leading to free throws for FSU…Second Gopher attempt is a Murphy three that was open but early in the shot clock.  Don’t like it.  Make a mid-range jumper first if you aren’t a regular three point shooter…Screen and roll goes to a rolling Ojo and Lynch didn’t get back plus he didn’t get help from Murphy either.  It was a deep screen and roll so tough to defend as Ojo set a good screen and Rathan-Mayes made a great play on his turn and dish…McBrayer with a couple misses an a turnover early…Lynch gets his first foul less than three minutes in…Akeem Springs on earlier than usual to get McBrayer who is off to a bad start…Murphy makes two foul shots which is big as he has been struggling at the line…With Lynch sitting the Gophs go to a zone but FSU gets an easy post touch and scores.  Eric Curry just isn’t ready to defend true centers at the high major level…Phil Cofer tries to attack Murphy baseline but Jordan did a great job forcing him to a bad angle and he stepped out of bounds.  Curry was in the right help position too…MN 4 FSU 7…

Coffey attacked the cup to his left the first possession and was blocked but Ojo but this time he uses the same attack and finishes with an And1.  Coffey is long but not as long as Coffey and not as long as Ojo so the angle was there for Amir to tie the game…Gophers back to the zone and FSU back to the post against Curry.  FSU gets a nice pass and shot off but it misses.  We are consistently seeing that Curry doesn’t have the size (height or beef) to defend down there.  I think you have to use him at the five because it gives you the best line-up but we may be finding that it can’t be used as much as they would like.  Lynch back on for Murphy moving Curry to the four, his natural spot…Two Gophers go to contest the shooter, it leaves a wide open board for Trent Forrest who moved the ball for an FSU And1.  Gophers continue to give away second chance points to the opposition…Springs with an o-board and tells his team to settle it down.  I like it…Isaac with a fade away jumper over Lynch.  That shot was fading out of the high post, nearly impossible to stop…Gilbert is the 8th man once again for Minnesota…The confident Gilbert gets his feet set and catches to hit another three.  Shooting very confidently this year, he’s made 5 of 9…MN 12 FSU 13...

Nate Mason and Jordan Murphy don’t communicate on a screen, run into each other, FSU gets an easy hoop.  These two have to communicate and be more disciplined in position on defense.  That’s way too easy for the Noles…Murphy has a double sent at him and he travels.  Teams will keep doing it, they know that he doesn’t move the ball much…Chasing Isaac, Coffey grabs the fellow freshman and that is two fouls on him.  Gophers have two with foul trouble and they are only at about six guys now where as FSU has twice as many guys to use…Rathan-Mayes gets the same grabbing on the chase foul that Coffey got and that is two on him…Officials have made it clear that very little contact will be allowed in this game…Isaac to Ojo on a pass and he dunks between Curry and Gilbert.  Neither stepped in to make a play on the ball.  May have to use Bakary Konate soon to have another inside body…Good ball movement with a reversal gets the ball to a feet set Springs and he hits a three…Lynch and Murphy give up another offensive board without box-outs, FSU scores inside again…MN 20 FSU 21…

Bakary Konate steps on the floor for his minutes, and of course he gets a weak foul call…Jordan Murphy doesn’t box out and gives up another offensive board.  Jordan just nailed a guy with a shoulder on an illegal screen.  Wish Jordan would box out with that type of contact.  McBrayer did just get hit with the same contact the previous possession with no whistle and that is why Pitino is hot...Another illegal screen, this one from Bakary and he has two fouls.  Bakary can stay on though as he doesn’t play that many minutes…Now a hand check from Dupree…Konate has made three of four foul shots and has played hard…Gophs now have Stephon Sharp, Bakary Konate, and Ahmad Gilbert on the floor and it’s not with two minutes left in the game…Gilbert passed the ball to nowhere anticipating something that wasn’t there.  Another turnover for him…MN 26 FSU 29…

The 7-foot-4 guys jumps on Gilbert’s back and it’s a foul on Ahmad.  Another bad whistle…Love how Curry moves off a ball screen.  Teams have a very hard time turning the corner when he’s cutting off the angle on a ball screen…Curry with an excellent offensive board actively moving off the ball to collect and give the Gophs another chance.   Mason throws up a prayer and the prayer answered was from the officials on a bail out call.  This is nearly unwatchable with all these whistles…With Bakary on the floor at the five and Curry at the four FSU isn’t getting deep post touches and is d-boarding well…Bakary boxes out and forces a foul.  He’s done a great job boxing out…Dupree hits a three and the Gophs have the lead!..Bakary with more foul shot makes, Curry with more boards.  Eric is so much more comfortable at the four….Bakary with a help over block!  He’s been a difference maker…Mason attacks, gets bumped slightly by Ojo and falls.  I don’t think that’s enough contact for a foul but in this game, that’s a foul.  Based on the way the game is being called…MN 33 FSU 31…

Second Half

Bacon, who has a big size edge on McBrayer, attacks and spins off Dupree to finish…Terrible start for Lynch who tries to shoot over three and shoots an airball.  Then doesn’t get back on defense so Rathan-Mayes sees the space and attacks for a lay-up, and then shortly after Lynch gives up an easy o-board for an Ojo dunk.  Bad effort from Reggie in early second half so Curry is on the floor fast…Coffey gets foul three after two minutes as he helped over on Ojo and committed a reaching foul…Gophs space the floor, Coffey attacks and should of received a whistle but didn’t.  Not fair for him considering what has been called on him.  Murphy gests the board and scores though…Isaac goes back to that spin move into a fallway jumper from 12 feet and there is nothing Murphy can do with that.  Unstoppable…Bacon attacks McBrayer and for the second time in the half just outmuscles for space and hits a short jumper…Amir Coffey gets foul four in help, again.  Two soft calls…MN 38 FSU 43…

Murphy with another post touch inside but doesn’t finish.  His big number games come from off ball scores of transition, backside cuts, and putbacks.  Nothing like that tonight.  Jordan, Amir, and Lynch just haven’t given this team much tonight….Florida State’s size has 100 percent taken Reggie Lynch out of this game.  He’s had a block or two, but hasn’t been able to score and defend consistently enough to make an impact yet…Terrance Mann uses a ball screen to clear Gilbert and Lynch is not there to cut off the angle so Mann gets to the rim to score.  Lynch continuing to struggle.  Maybe come back with Konate who was playing quite well…In comes Konate…Dupree gets a runner throw back to half court for a wide open Bacon dunk and then needing a good possession, Nate Mason throws a full speed ground ball to Bakary that of course is missed as it was a foot off the ground.  Nate has to know better than to do that, it has to be a slowed down possession, not a fly by when you have no momentum…Konate with a nice kick-out to Springs for a much needed trey make…7-ft-4 Christ Koumadje has been very good on both ends.  Did not expect him to make this impact…MN 42 FSU 54…

Murphy with a good box-out, outlets, receives again, passes to Gilbert who hits his second three of the game.  Good pass from Murphy…FSU is trapping immediately after the Gophs cross the line.  When the Gophs beat it, it seems like they feel they must attack.  They have to stay disciplined because even though they beat a trap there is still size standing in the paint.  It feels like Minnesota has done one of two things, used a ball screen and tried to score immediately or they have beat the trap and then felt they needed to attack immediately with numbers but’s a defense that is still in position with defenders recovering from a short distance…MN 49 FSU 58…

Murphy runs into an Ojo arm, takes himself out of the play, Isaac gets loose and makes a runner.  Gophers down 14…Minnesota has had Jordan Murphy leading possessions attacking across the arc three of the last four possessions.  Whenever the Gophs beat the FSU pressure they continue going forward like an out of control train.  They need to collect, get the ball to the guards, run something.  Instead we get another Jordan Murphy attack and failed possession…Bacon beats McBrayer to the basket and Curry had his back to the ball and didn’t get to his help position until it was too late…MN 53 FSU 72…

After the timeout the Gophers have played really hard scoring three times at the rim and defending harder.  On one hand, good for them continuing to work.  On the other, what took so long?...Gophs on a 10-0 run as Lynch has scored a couple times late….Springs hits a three and the run is 13-1 late…Lynch foul shot makes the run 14-2 late…MN 67 FSU 75 Final…
