Mississippi JUCO quarterback Neil McLaurin pulls the trigger on the Minnesota Golden Gophers

Mississippi JUCO quarterback Neil McLaurin pulls the trigger on the Minnesota Golden Gophers after receiving an offer on his official visit. GopherIllustrated spoke with McLaurin to learn more.

"While on the Minnesota visit we took a tour around the city, watched the team practice, looked at their stadium, went out to eat at Fogo de Chao and meet some of the football players," Mississippi JUCO quarterback Neil McLaurin said to GopherIllustrated. "I thought the practice on Saturday was great. They have an indoor facility which is good for bad weather, and I loved how they operated it. My former teammate Vincent Calhoun was a great host, as he helped me with everything I needed to know about the Gophers. He maded sure I had a great weekend in Minnesota. His message to me was that I couldn't go wrong being a Golden Gopher and that they really take good care of the players up there."

"Minnesota extended the scholarship offer on Saturday night when we were at Fogo de Chao," McLaurin explained to GI. "Coach Johnson and Claeys told me about the offer, and they told me that they needed help on the offensive side of the ball at quarterback. They needed to make sure that they have a quarterback who's a leader who can take control of the offense, and I told them I was that guy. I was kind of thinking about Minnesota throughout the day on Saturday on if they were to offer, and then I made my decision that night before dinner that if they were to offer, I'd commit. And that's what happened. Claeys and Johnson were excited when I told them I wanted to commit, so we had a good night at Fogo."

McLaurin will sign with Minnesota now later this week.

"I'll be signing with Minnesota on Wednesday, and then I'll be up there in January. A couple of big reasons I wanted to be a Gopher is I get to play with a former teammate of mine in Big Vince, and Minnesota gives me a chance to be away from home more and experience new things. I know I'll be a good Golden Gopher football player. Claeys and Johnson have told me that they want me so much because of my speed at the position, that I throw the ball well, and I already have experience on what it's like to be a college quarterback. I want Gopher fans to know that I'm looking forward to seeing them cheer us Gophers on to many victories in the next few years."
