Pregame

Minnesota will start Nate Mason, Dupree McBrayer, Amir Coffey, Jordan Murphy, and Reggie Lynch once again.  They've used that line-up all but one game this year to start.  Mason, McBrayer, and Murphy all played big minutes when Minnesota took the Boilers to the final 20 seconds last year....Purdue to start Caleb Swanigan, Isaac Haas, Carsen Edwards, Dakota Mathias, and PJ Thompson.  Vincent Edwards has been coming off the bench despite being the team's third leading scorer.  He had 24 against Minnesota last year and pretty much won them the game...Gopher big Bakary Konate had a great game vs Purdue last year defending...Purdue is 12-2 on the season just like Minnesota.  Their most recent loss was to Louisville and Rick Pitino, the father of Gopher Coach Richard Pitino...

First Half

Murphy went aggressively at Caleb Swanigan and scored over the top.  Love that he went that hard on play one.  Swanigan that tried to go hard at Lynch the other way and got swatted.  Some contact with no call which is huge for Reggie.  That was followed by a Reggie spin and touch shot around Haas.  Great start.  But then Murphy didn’t box out Swanigan so he gets a putback.  But then Murphy with a jumper over Swanigan!  Big plays early around the basket….Murphy blocks out Swanigan that time and gets the d-board…Lynch screen clears Nate Mason for a pull-up and it goes.  Big start by Reggie…Gophers are sending two guys at Haas and it’s worked!...Murphy three!  Jordan has been outstanding…Minnesota has rattled Haas with the extra attention…Bakary Konate on for Reggie after Reggie gets foul one….On another Haas double team Murphy gets a reach.  That’s a bad foul and he knew it.  Reggie’s foul was one you can live with…Pitino not taking any chances pulling Murphy and Lynch immediately so they don’t get into foul trouble again…Dupree McBrayer flies by Purdue for two scores and now Mason does the same.  Purdue couldn’t keep him in front last year, can’t keep him in front now…MN 17 Pur 4…

Eric Curry with foul two.   I thought based on the first contact this game would be a little tougher than usual but the officials have gone mega soft already calling weak touch calls.  After writing that, Amir Coffey gets banged and no foul.  Lucky for the Gophs there was a putback by Reggie….Purdue has scored twice in transition retreat now.  Gophers are scrambling back but not locating the way they need to so the Boilers have two open deep scores…Pitino sets up Lynch catching on the roll to score out of the timeout.  Nice draw-up from Pitino out of the timeout, three scores for Reggie…MN 21 Pur 15…

Spike Albrecht on for the first time in a long time.  Former Michigan player that transferred in…Reggie called for having his knee pushing Haas up the lane.  Curry and Lynch with two fouls meanwhile Purdue has one total.  This just isn’t home officiating, this is straight uneven contact inside on both ends.  Biased or not, the numbers are eyes don’t lie…Gophers starting to settle for jumpers.  They need to get the ball moving and get some shots near the rim like when this game started….Having Reggie out hurt.  He was playing extremely well…Smotherman pushes Murphy up the lane with his shoulder and no call.  Reggie does the same with his hips and he’s on the bench….Purdue foul two comes after 11 minutes! Finally….Back the other way Smotherman with a clean catch and finish.  He had great position because Minnesota can’t afford to work physically for position…Spike beats Akeem, Bakary is late getting over, Purdue score.  Bakary also with a missed lay-up.  He needs to be better as Bakary has hurt them today….MN 23 Pur 19…

https://twitter.com/Marcus_R_Fuller/status/815680177225289729

Spike gets an offensive board as Nate Mason didn’t box him out at all but Konate with good defense to stop Swanigan seconds later…Mason makes up for it with a pull-up jumper.  His signature move from mid-range….Coffey gets in the open floor for the first time and scores.  They need two or three more occasions where Amir pushes in transition off a long miss, turnover, or quick outlet…Mason attacks a low returning Purdue defense and gets fouled…Mason with a steal and McBrayer with the dunk! Huge…Bakary with two fouls now.  Minnesota literally can’t be physical, can’t touch guys.  They have four bigs and three have two fouls although you can go with Bakary until he gets three in the half…Bakary rolls to the basket and Mason tries to hit him but Bakary wasn’t even looking and it’s a turnover.  Now Bakary is late coming off a screen again…Mathias beats Coffey inside because Amir was late in getting over to cut off high side and it becomes a kickout three.  Amir is not working around screens hard enough at all…Bakary gives up another basket with bad positioning.  Swanigan simply fought under him…MN 32 Pur 28…

Purdue tries a deep contested three and it misses.  Bakary had a nice defensive board.  Bakary will always try, his mistakes are never in effort.  It’s always slow to react with Konate…Nate Mason corner turns again to score.  Purdue can not move with him in the backcourt….Gophers get a call back as Coffey sells some weak contact on Kline and gets foul shots.  That is a bad call but Minnesota is owed a couple considering the post contact difference most the way.  Coffey doesn’t take advantage, misses both…Gophers still doubling and tripling post and it works for a turnover…Murphy misses a lay-up and Bakary gets foul three smashing a guy trying to get a board.  Gophers have to bring Curry back on who has two fouls…Murphy can’t shoot over Swanigan and misses and then gets a foul trying to get the board.  Was Jordan fouled?  Questionable for sure.  Likely not, but again, the officials called similar the other way….All this post battling, Swanigan has zero fouls.  That is ridiculous.  Mason attacks him and there is some contact, nothing.  Edwards hits the other way from the arc.  One point game…MN 38 Purdue 35….

Second Half

Jordan Murphy hits his fourth jumper of the day.  Day by day he’s becoming a bit more comfortable with the range on his shot…Mason slow to react on a Thompson jumper and it’s wide open to shoot.  Nate basically let him shoot after watching the previous brick…Haas pushes Murphy under the basket and finally we have a lot post foul on Purdue…Lynch fights around Haas to grab a board and then scores.  Haas gets him back the other way with a hook…Murphy gets away with a trip and Purdue is called for a travel.  That’s one the other way as the Gophers got away with one…Murphy gets third foul moments later…McBrayer with an early step back three and then Edwards comes back the other way and hits a three.  Purdue lead…Pur 45 MN 43….

Eric Curry, what are you doing?  A contested three after one pass out of a timeout?  Now McBrayer launches early again.  What are they doing?...Haas with an elbow hoop smacking Lynch and no call but on the miss the refs get Swanigan on the follow up.  I think that was a make-up call as the ref felt he missed the hook…Curry shoots and misses another early jumper.  Do these guys not like good shots near the rim? Mason is late to react to Thompson again.  Thompson hits again.  Nate needs to pick up his defensive effort…Now Mason tries to shoot a quick contested jumper again.  I know the team is doubling but Nate has to fight to get back, not job back…When was the last time Minnesota got a ball reversal? When was the last time they even moved the ball to one another? Mason scores but it was on a no pass attack…Mason hits a transition three.  No passes again but on that one nobody was near him in transition so I can live with it….Curry falls asleep ball watching and doesn’t step out to help on Mason’s man and it’s another made three from Thompson.  They let him get hot by leaving him wide open…Curry shoots another long jumper and, that one goes.  It better have.  At least that one was on a reversal…MN 51 Pur 53…

Mason uses that Bakary high ball screen and gets space for a make.  Great shot by Mason and Purdue opened this door by not getting back to get a hand up…Mason attacks and scores over Kline while being fouled.  He didn’t even need a screen on that one. It was another bad shot honestly but he’s on fire so it’s an And1…Purdue has some open shooters but that will happen when doubling the post like Minnesota is…Vince Edwards with an athletic score moving around the help to score. Tough make form him…Another Mason no pass shot and it misses.  I know he’s hot but this ball has to move.  Gophs aren’t going to win on Mason 1 on 1 attempts.  He needs to shoot but within this team offense…Michael Hurt is beat to the rim by Kline and that misses but the attack took Bakary away from Swanigan who scores…Murphy is called for just a horrible forearm to the back.  Absurd.  They have let Purdue do that all game long. That’s how Swanigan defends the post all the time and he has one foul…Akeem Springs blocks, pushes to Amir, and Amir hits.  Amir in transition is always higher percent wherever…MN 61 Pur 57…

No box-out from Curry, Edwards collects and scores.  That’s on Eric.  Makes no sense that a guy like him doesn’t make contact when shot goes up, he seems like he would like to… Springs with the runner.  Big make…Lynch back on the floor and battling for some boards.  His latest becomes an outlet to Amir, Amir then attacks and hits Lynch for a dunk…Swanigan gets foul four on Lynch on a completely clean block. Another bad call…Coffey and Curry both miss lay-ups, Swanigan comes the other way and puts another foul on Bakary.  He has foul four…Mason with a crazy And1?  Wow.  I can’t believe he even tried that.  Crazy bank shot and he then had some words for his guy.  Have to cut that out, Gophs can’t afford to get a T right now…Swanigan with a great pass out of the double and it’s an open Purdue three.  Big make….Back the other way Curry takes a three late in the game and it clanks.  Another bad shot…Now Bakary gets foul five….Purdue gets a putback on a foul shot and the game is tied.  That’s on Reggie who didn’t even try to block Kline out…Murphy fouls out on a charge.  That was a dive.  Likely too much shoulder though...That’s a huge call as Jordan has been big….Dupree late around a screen, Kline catches and hits a three. But Amir with a three to tie the game…MN 71 Pur 71…

Overtime

That Swanigan make was a travel.  Picked his foot right off the floor.  Very clear and not called for second straight time…Gophers get a post score to tie but give up a score to Swanigan on a putback…Curry misses another long jumper.  Why? You’ve missed most so let’s move the ball and try the jumpers another day…A three second call on Purdue?  Where? Edwards was in there for 3.1 seconds based on the clock but it hasn’t been whistled all year, why now?  Wasn’t Swanigan. He was in there for maybe one…Curry catches in high post and attacks to score.  Now that I a good score.  He definitely traveled….Curry getting some big taps.  The effort is there from him.  Not scared at all and that’s great to see.  Needs to clean some things up but playing hard, making plays…Huge play from McBrayer stealing a pass and then he makes a fade and the Gophs are up 81-75….Curry with another huge board in traffic!  And Curry with a three! Man, why not.  Did I just say to pull those back?  I sure did.  But he’s been huge…Now Reggie fouls out.  Its late though, it’s okay to go with one big now because taking a big off helps foul shooting…Akeem making foul shots and the Gophers are going to get a win.  They get one back after the loss to Michigan State. Great growth…MN 91 Pur 82….
