Pregame

Minnesota beat Ohio State 78-66 in the previous meeting 17 days ago....Minnesota is 3-4 in Big Ten play, 15-5 overall.  Ohio State is 12-8 overall, 2-5 in Big Ten play...Minnesota is now starting Nate Mason, Akeem Springs, Amir Coffey, Jordan Murphy, and Reggie Lynch after Springs recently replaced Dupree McBrayer in the starting five. Springs and Coffey were the top players in the last game...Ohio State continues to start JaQuan Lyle, Kam Williams, Marc Loving, Jae'Sean Tate, and Trevor Thompson.  Minnesota had trouble with Tate and Thompson in the previous game but the Gophers blocked twelve shots...

First Half

Minnesota’s first possession was a balanced floor post touch with good ball movement and an excellent pass for a Reggie And1.  Back the other way Trevor Thompson scores twice.  Both Reggie and Trevor get early fouls and instantly their fight is weaker inside….JaQuan Lyle makes a three as Nate Mason and Jordan Murphy mess up a ball screen giving him the room to hit.  Gophs may be playing him like that tough and giving that shot to Lyle…Akeem Springs three but a turnover early….Nate Mason misses his first shot which isn’t a good thing…Jordan Murphy gets a turnover because he is posting up and doesn’t know the shot clock.  Wow.  Murphy and Mason need good games, neither off to a good start…Jae’Sean Tate outworks Murphy for a putback score.  Terrible start for Murphy…Now Murphy fouls.   Not what they wanted to see…MN 6 OSU 11…

Out of the timeout Akeem Springs throws up an airball.  Ouch.  Awful start for Minnesota after possession one…Thompson faces up and makes.  Opposing bigs just feasting on Minnesota….Mason missing again.   Nothing has changed from recent games…Nate Mason gets a drop in his drought using a ball screen from Bakary Konate to hit…Murphy goes slowly under a ball screen for the second time and it’s an open make for Marc Loving…OSU on a 14-2 run while the Gophers have zero energy….Eric Curry knocks out a corner three!  Big make for the Gophs.  It’s not even overtime and he made a three!  McBrayer had that assist and then just scored a pull-up.  Huge minutes from McBrayer to close this gap…MN 13 OSU 18…

Bakary Konate with a foul on a three point shooter and that gives Andre Wesson three makes. Also Bakary’s third foul and they need him on the floor…Akeem Springs gets over the screen early and forces a turnover.  Effort!  They need more of that. But then a Lynch turnover gives OSU a transition three for Lyle, his second three…Gophers double the post, Dupree is late in help, pass goes to open man for a lay-up.  Double teams have not been good for the Gophers in the Big Ten…Amir’s guy screens Reggie, Amir says nothing, easy backdoor lob.  Amir has to be better off the ball on defense…Dupree makes a nice shot using a Reggie screen which is good but then he takes a terrible shot the next time down…MN 17 OSU 28…

Amir Coffey and Jordan Murphy on the bench together after doing pretty much nothing.  No effort…Tate cuts right in front of Eric Curry and gets an easy hoop.  Curry didn’t even see his guy at all.  Just ran right by him for an easy score…Lynch scores a couple times and his teammates don’t even react.  No life on an And1…MN 23 OSU 35…

JaQuan Lyle scores right over the top of Nate Mason.  He traveled but that’s par for the course at this moment….Mason with the push, skips to Springs, Springs hits a three.  Twelve point game.  Then a block from Reggie and Jordan together followed by a Mason three!  Effort plays and it’s a nice point game…Dupree with a gorgeous wrap around pass to a cutting Reggie and that’s a dunk.  Then Mason forces a turnover.  We have effort!...Jordan Murphy with a putback and we have a five point game at the half!  That came at the buzzer…MN 40 OSU 35…

Second Half

Amir Coffey attacks to make a one hander for his first impact play of the game.  Deeply needed…Murphy missed tip dunk but the effort was there.  This team needs that effort from him.  Good to see…Thompson is physically attacking like all the other bigs have done in this league.  Went at Reggie with shoulder and scored…Akeem gets Thompson on him, waves others off, attack the big for a score.  Great veteran play…Murphy rejects Tate hard and then goes the other way and gets foul shots…Bakary shoots a three?  Honestly what the hell?  Clank so loud…MN 42 PSU 46…

Mason just watched Loving go by him without making a box-out hit.  No effort to try and box out and that costs Minnesota two points…Nate makes up for it by hitting a three after a nice kick-out from Dupree…Mason with the pull-up!  Nate is heating up at the perfect time, four point game…Ball is on the floor two Buckeyes on the floor, two Gophers standing.  Lucky that Springs raced back to make an effort play…MN 50 OSU 55…

Akeem Springs gets a double-double for the first time as a Gopher…Mason attacks against a relaxed defense and it’s an eight point game.  Gophers are not hitting from three, 5 of 18.  So attack has to be there, defense into transition has to be there.  Mason just hit Amir in the open floor for a key score.  Murphy started that with a board into an outlet…Mason attacks and kicks to a feet set Amir for a three! Huge shot.  Mason is playmaking in many ways right now.  Three point game…Nate Mason uses a ball screen and makes a three to get this within two!  Maybe they will do this at the arc…MN 66 OSU 68…

Ohio State was awful from the foul line last game, 11 of 22.  This game 21 of 25.  Big difference….Coffey fouled on the dunk but nothing.  Reggie called for a travel when he never did.  Amir fouled again, nothing.  Honestly, does it have to be a weak illegal screen or post contact to get a call?...Kam Williams travels twice but not whistle and he scores.  Unreal….Ohio State huts a three but then Akeem makes one of his own.  Less than a minute left…Ohio State fouls Akeem, no call, ball to Ohio State.  The officials are not helping Minnesota late…Springs has a wide open look late but it comes off.  It was a good shot…Now Reggie Lynch misses a lay-up…OSU 78 MN 72…
