January 27th Minnesota Visit Preview: PJ Fleck attempts to close the 2017 class with a big splash

GopherIllustrated previews Minnesota's big final recruiting weekend with a look at the official visitors that will be rowing their way to Dinkytown.

Committed Visitors

The Scoop: Illinois wide receiver Chris Bell will take his first visit to Minnesota this weekend, after immediately flipping from Western Michigan to Minnesota the day that P.J. Fleck was hired. He's been solid since his flip, and the wide receiver spot is one Gopher fans should be excited about with Fleck and Simon now on the staff.

Analysis: "Really good athlete with exceptional body control and ball skills. Makes tough catches seem routine and is able to do that even with tight coverage in contested situations. Good, solid speed. Can make plays after the catch, but is more of a downfield guy than an elusive guy." - Allen Trieu

Uncommitted visitors

The Scoop: Hopkins DE Boye Mafe's recruitment has been an interesting one to follow, and it's about time for it to come to a conclusion this weekend. Mafe took an official visit to Rutgers this past weekend and now it's Minnesota turn on the final recruiting weekend. You'd have to expect that if Mafe finds what he's looking for this weekend, he'll be a Gopher. That being said, his father is a Rutgers graduate, so we're not ruling anything out with Mafe at this point.

Analysis: "Long, lean defender. Good athlete with a lot of upside. Has to get stronger and improve technique but frame and ability to bend and run down ball carriers is not easy to find." - Allen Trieu

The Scoop: Gophers coach P.J. Fleck and offensive line coach Ed Warinner visited Malcolm Robinson on Tuesday, and Robinson announced Thursday morning that he was going to de-commit from Purdue. Things look promising for the Gophers to land a top 10 Midwest defensive tackle if things go smoothly.

Analysis: "Senior defensive tackle Malcolm Robinson is a three-star recruit and one of Ohio's top interior defensive linemen. He was extremely disruptive in Massillon's final regular season game, keying a 23-21 win over arch rival Canton McKinley. Robinson is quick off the ball, and plays with a high motor. He is also a great student in the classroom, and a team leader for Massillon." - Bill Greene

The Scoop: Gophers defensive line coach Bryce Paup went and visited the Iowa Western defensive tackle Royal Silver yesterday, and it resulted in a Minnesota offer and an official visit set for this weekend. Silver's seen his recruitment really pick up in the last week with offers from Syracuse and Memphis, and with the Gopher connection to his JUCO, the stars seem to be aligning here for a Minnesota commitment.

The Scoop: Defensive line coach Bryce Paup went and saw Kentucky defensive tackle Ray Horton on Thursday at school, and that's when the official visit was set. Horton and his mother start their Minnesota visit this morning, but there's no offer, yet.

The Scoop: Defensive line coach Bryce Paup visited Northern Iowa commit Austin Schirck at school yesterday, and he'll be taking an official visit to Minnesota this weekend. Schrick was committed to Paup at Northern Iowa and with Paup now at Minnesota, the Gophers will take a look at the Iowa All-State player this weekend.

The Scoop: Minnesota's been looking for quality corners to end their 2017 recruiting class, and New Jersey's Ihmir Marsette fits the bill. The Gophers are locked in a tight Big Ten race with Iowa and Rutgers for the east coast play-maker. Minnesota defensive coordinator Robb Smith was with Marsette on Tuesday, and Minnesota will get the final visit this weekend.

Analysis: "Marsette is the type of cornerback Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck needs to have to play his style of defense in which corners can play press man-to-man and also have the length and speed to turn and run with the receiver. He is physical and fast, and has a lot of room for development." - Brian Dohn

The Scoop: Minnesota's needing corners with the impending suspensions / expulsions being decided here soon, and Georgia's Justus Harris could fit that bill. Minnesota DB coach Mo Linguist visited Harris yesterday and set the visit to the Twin Cities this weekend. Harris' tape reminds GI a lot of KiAnte Hardin, which would be a good thing for Minnesota.

The Scoop: Minnesota defensive back coach Mo Linguist visited Lubin on Tuesday night, and that's when the Gophers offered Lubin an official visit this weekend. It'll be interesting to see what the Gophers decide on doing with the South Florida defensive back.
