"The visit this weekend was great," Carroll (Iowa) defensive lineman Austin Schirck said to GopherIllustrated Sunday afternoon. "We had an awesome brunch in the stadium this morning, and I had an ELITE meeting with coach P.J. Fleck, so it was just an all-around elite weekend at Minnesota. Coach Fleck offered me about an hour ago in my one on one meeting with him, and he said that I fit the culture he's trying to bring in. He mentioned how I was really intriguing to him, as he was surprised that I made it out of state without have any offers from FBS level schools. He liked me and my family, and thought I was definitely a great fit for the Gophers."
"Minnesota wants me at strong-side defensive end from my understanding," Schirck explained to GI. "They want to get me up to 285-295 lbs, and then we'll go from there. Defensive line coach Bryce Paup has been a great mentor to me over the past year. I told him that he should help me out and throw my name around up there at Minnesota when he took the job there, as I initiated the contract and wanted him to ask Minnesota to recruit me, and now here we are. He's been so helpful in this whole process as he's a great, genuine and elite guy. He's extremely happy for me. I knew that with coach Paup there, immediately after coach Fleck offered me, I committed. Coach Fleck looked happy and astonished with that quick decision, but I knew exactly what I wanted to do the moment I stepped on campus at Minnesota this weekend, and that was be a Gopher."
Schirck also enjoyed hanging out with the Gopher players over the weekend.
"My host for the visit was Andrew Stelter, and he's a great guy. He really brought me in as a brother, and that's what I loved. He was telling me that this place is something special, and we are going to be big things and win a B1G and National Championship. My parents loved the visit too, and they were overwhelmed with joy with my new decision, and they are extremely happy for me no matter what I do."
The Carroll defensive lineman is excited to get back up to Minneapolis this summer.
"It's an awesome feeling to be committed to Minnesota right now, as I've always wanted to play Big Ten ball. The culture, atmosphere, and the whole campus and stadium just sold me on Minnesota. It's awesome there. I loved the meetings with Fleck, and he's an awesome guy and you can just tell that he means business. I want Minnesota fans to know that I'm going to bring passion, energy, speed, agility, enthusiasm and the ability to be coachable to the defensive line. Row the Boat!"
