Pregame

Minnesota is in their home whites tonight.  Minnesota is 16-7 overall, 4-6 in the Big Ten.  Iowa is 14-10, 6-5 in Big Ten play.  Gophers coming off a win at Champaign, Iowa has recently beat Nebraska, Rutgers, and Ohio State....Iowa has been starting four freshman along with senior Peter Jok.  Jok missed two games with a back injury and then came back against Nebraska but he was not at full strength.  Along with him Jordan Bohannon, Isaiah Moss, Tyler Cook, and Cordell Pemsi, all freshman....Minnesota is expected to start Nate Mason, Akeem Springs, Amir Coffey, Jordan Murphy, and Reggie Lynch...The last time Iowa was here they upset Minnesota at the buzzer and began the derailment of Minnesota's NCAA Tournament hopes in Pitino's first season as coach...Late change:  Iowa is starting Ahmad Wagner instead of Pemsl...

5 star 2020 guard Jalen Suggs is a Gopher guest tonight along with 2020 teammates Terry Lockett and Kaden Johnson.

First Half

Nate Mason with the perfect start on offense.  Attacked to score, hit a three, and called Reggie from a post up as he wanted screen.  Nate used that screen to attack, draw in defenders, and then had both Murphy for a dunk AND Akeem for a corner three.  Went with the corner three option and it worked.  That built things up for Akeem to hit another kickout two possessions later.  The only problem Nate has had was getting caught on a screen allowing Bohannon space to hit a jumper…Amir Coffey doing a great job chasing Peter Jok over screens early.  No good looks for Jok yet….Iowa trying a little zone…MN 11 Iowa 6

Stop shooting jumpers so early in the shot clock bigs!...Bakary Konate gets two quick fouls so Murphy joins Curry as bigs.  This is fine vs Iowa who isn’t really playing with a center anyway in this zone…Dupree McBrayer attacked twice for good looks.  Made the first which was a floater but missed the second.  Pitino was very upset as he thought Dupree was attacked.  Dupree had a closeout mistake that did cost his team a good shot for Iowa…No shots for Jordan Murphy yet but a couple boards and good defense…MN 13 IA 13…

Out of the timeout Iowa goes right at Dupree with a screen and he was taken out of the play so Iowa had an easy cutting score.  Good set by McCaffrey, bad defense from Dupree and that is why they ran it at him.  Good scouting…Eric Curry has a block and a putback early.  Playing with energy…Amir Coffey with a reversal, ball goes to Jordan Murphy, Jordan puts the ball on the deck and finishes plus is fouled. Big make for him and he’s earned it the way he’s played….Ahmad Gilbert on the floor, he was terrible in his one minute last game.  Needs to be smarter…Wagner tries to dunk on Lynch but Reggie stuffs him a foot above the rim.  Luckily for Iowa though the ball lands right in Wagner’s lap so he gets an easy lay-up with Reggie on the ground…Gilbert with a quick shot that is an airball.  Ouch.  Makes up for it with a board next time down…MN 17 IA 17…

Ahmad Gilbert makes one of two foul shots and then comes back the other way and gets torched by a cut from Wagner.  Ahmad was ball watching and is now sitting.  Coffey came in and gave up a Jok jumper because Amir didn’t fight as hard around the screen as he was before nor did he get good help…Dupree knocks out two jumpers doing the job and then Mason, his replacement, scores on an attack…Jok has been limited, now Minnesota needs somebody to stop Moss.  Akeem Springs and Dupree had a tough time.  That said, Akeem has hit three threes (just made one) so he’s getting things back…Reggie Lynch with four blocks.  Paint has been well controlled.  Gophers just need to keep chasing Moss and helping the guards chasing Moss as he’s hit five jumpers….Akeem makes his fourth three against the Iowa zone.  People don’t zone Minnesota for a reason…MN 33 IA 24…

Minnesota has too many good that attack lanes well.  That’s why Mason has four scores and three assists (three attacking buckets), Durpee has attacked three times to score, and Amir Coffey has five assists.  Add in the four wide open baskets for Akeem Springs at the arc and they have killed the zone Iowa tried.  Nobody plays zone vs Minnesota because they pass so well and they usually have three, sometimes four guys they trust to attack open lanes plus they have Akeem shooting well.  Bad move from Iowa.  The Hawks have since switched to a switching man to man which Minnesota has more trouble with…More great Gopher passing.  Murphy to Curry on the baseline and Eric found Nate Mason for an open three….Murphy makes two foul shots, gets a defensive board, and makes a buzzer beating four footer!  Great half for Murphy…MN 40 Iowa 29…

Second Half

Iowa goes zone again.  Minnesota carves it up, again.  Only Akeem missed the lay-up but they easily got Akeem into space for a good shot…Now they get the ball to Amir in the middle and he finds Reggie Lynch for an And1….Iowa quickly gets out of the zone.  I really have no idea why McCaffrey did it unless that’s all they do.  If it’s what they do a lot, it looked terrible…Coffey with a top of the key three, Murphy with a putback. Gophers rolling right now….Minnesota gives up an Iowa dunk right before the tv timeout…MN 48 Iowa 38…

https://twitter.com/RyanJamesMN/status/829529076851425281

Curry has his man in good post position but Reggie leaves his man anyway and the Iowa miss becomes a putback dunk.  I know that the Gophers are blocking everything but you can’t leave your man to block shots when you see that he’s well covered.  Wide open dunk for Dom Uhl…Reggie goes to the bench after that mistake and Jordan Murphy on.  Jordan quickly gets an And1 putback complete with free throw make…Nate Mason did take a bad shot early in the clock.  Missed Reggie on the roll.  He hasn’t had many bad shots but that was one of them…Murphy with a reverse lay-up and that is three second half scores for him…Mason gives the ball to Murphy on the break and that is four Murphy scores…MN 56 IA 43

https://twitter.com/Marcus_R_Fuller/status/829533810316439554

Jok gets loose and scores, Iowa traps Dupree who turns the ball over, Jok scores again.  Five point game.  Just like that this game is close again…Dupre McBrayer dribbles into the man trap again! Twice in a row…Jok hits another three.  Since McCaffrey went to the trap they’ve went on a 10-0 run…Now Akeem Springs dribbles into two guys and Iowa scores the other way.  Iowa takes the lead and Minnesota has blown a double figure halftime lead at home for the third time in five Big Ten games…Mason tries a tough shot, misses, ball tapped out, Akeem hits a huge three.  Not a good shot but a needed shot…Now Amir Coffey throws the ball away…MN 59 IA 61….

Jok hits a three and Iowa is up three…Eric Curry takes, and makes a jumper!  He better of made that or the crowd would of lost their mind…Gophers finally be patient with this trap.  No need to attack it so fast and the last time down they didn’t. It’s like a zone trap look but it’s really a trap into a man to man scramble.  It had worked but since being calmed Minnesota has handled it…Iowa is getting some great screens to free Jok…Coffey misses two foul shots.  Two free tosses missed in the clutch of a game they have to have…MN 67 IA 69…A

Amir Coffey gives up another clutch offensive rebound.  He has to get that part of his game cleaned up because it costs late them too much. That said Moss missed one of the two free throws after Amir grabbed him…Springs misses a lay-up, Reggie gets the board but also misses the lay-up.  Good thing Amir Coffey stole the ball and went in for the dunk…The towel guy went to wipe up the floor and nearly got ran over…Gophers with great defense but in the final seconds Murphy picks up a bad foul.  Jok makes two….Iowa gets too aggressive with the trap and fouls Mason. Mason makes two free tosses…Jok with a three over the length of Reggie Lynch.  Iowa got the switch and Jok took advantage…Iowa has to take a bad shot against the shot clock but Gophers don’t box out again.  Iowa gets the ball again and finds a player for a score.  So costly….Nate Mason attacks two, scores off the glass, tie game.  This is after Minnesota got a jump ball call…Iowa misses, overtime…77-77

Overtime

Amir Coffey does a great job denying Amir the ball, Iowa eventually gets the ball there but timing was off so it’s a turnover….Murphy with a physical score on a putback….Mason with an And1 attack…Reggie Lynch fouls out.  Very similar points in the game (time on clock, even though this is OT) when Reggie fouled out vs Maryland and Wisconsin.  Gophers fell apart on defense.  Can they overtime tonight…Iowa doesn’t have a guy that can keep Mason from corner turning. If he gets space Minnesota will be in good shape…Nate Mason has an isolation but on the attack nobody moved so there was nothing for him to do.  Bad possessions…Iowa gets a Bohannon score…Eric Curry three in a tie game with 60 seconds to go.  It has worked three times now actually this year but percentage wise it hasn’t been the shot they would want.  Eric misses…Huge defensive play by Murphy helping back to the roller off the screen and getting a steal…Minnesota goes to Mason late and he can’t get space in a one on one with help so close on the attack.  Shot is missed and it’s a shot clock violation…MN 84 Iowa 84…

Double Overtime

Peter Jok gets switched on to Jordan Murphy and Jordan easily gets a putback score…Bohanon gets Curry on him so he makes a deep contested three.  Big shot…Amir catches on the curl, is fouled but not call, makes a shot…Amir on the steal and dunk….Iowa doubles Springs, he gets to Curry, Curry with a great pass to Jordan Murphy…Another steal, Mason scores in the open floor.  Seven point game….Jordan Murphy fouls out on another bad call.  He had 25 and 19 when he left the court.  Uhl scores two foul shots and we have a five point game with 108 seconds left…Gophers are up 11 and they will win this game….MN 101 IA 89...
