RB Lawrence Maroney -- The freshman from St. Louis had people wondering why he's not being redshirted this year, considering the Gophers' considerable depth in the backfield. But Maroney's eye-popping speed that's been on display in the season's first two games should give Gopher fans an idea of why the coaching staff thinks he will find a way to contribute. On Saturday, Maroney scored on a 10-yard run and an 88-yard kickoff return, and had 48 yards on seven carries.
K Rhys Lloyd -- Two weeks ago, even the most die-hard Gophers fan probably hadn't even heard of Lloyd. But the NCAA declared him eligible in the week leading up to the Tulsa game, and the juco transfer from England looks like he's up to the task of replacing Minnesota's all-time leading scorer, Dan Nystrom. Lloyd's evening Saturday included a 52-yard field goal, a 26-yard field goal, six-for-six on extra points, and several booming kickoffs.
TE Matt Spaeth -- With senior TE Ben Utecht sidelined by a strained hip, Spaeth stepped into the starting lineup with style. The freshman from St. Michael-Albertville caught three balls for 31 yards and the Gophers offense didn't miss a beat despite the absence of its all-America caliber tight end.
LB Terrance Campbell -- Nicknamed "Stick" for his 200-pound frame and his penchant for sticking opposing ball-carriers, Campbell held off a challenge to keep his starting weakside linebacker role. On Saturday, the sophomore from Atlanta registered a pair of quarterback sacks among his four tackles.
S Justin Fraley -- On defense and special teams, Fraley was all over the field Saturday night. Backing up starters Eli Ward and Justin Isom, Fraley led the team with eight tackles and helped the Gophers dominate the kicking game.
