"I've visited Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois lately and those are the three schools standing out to me right now," Scout300 Indiana defensive back D.J. Johnson said to Scout.com. "At Iowa, I could tell that they really wanted me there and I like the family environment there too. They have nice facilities there and their head coach is really cool as I got to sit down with him for about 20 minutes with my mom so that was nice. I'd say the Iowa coach that I have the best relationship with is coach Bell, as he hits me up all the time and we text all the time, so I talk with him a lot. Illinois is really nice too as I got to talk with coach Lovie Smith for about an hour with my mom. He's such a legend so that was pretty good. They have nice family environment too and I can tell that they really want me, so it's nice to be wanted."
"I love Minnesota," Johnson said to Scout. "There's a lot of energy coming out of Minnesota with coach P.J. Fleck and I feel like they're going to do something big there this year. I like the energy though as it gets everybody going and you need somebody like that to push you and stay on you, so I really like coach Fleck for that reason. I like Minnesota and Iowa the most right now, and Minnesota might be at the top. I'm going to back up to Ohio State soon, and I'll be up at Michigan State soon."
With early favorites, don't expect Johnson to make a decision any time soon.
"I'll definitely be taking official visits as I want to be sure in the decision that I do make with my commitment," Johnson explained. "I want to get up there and stay overnight and see everything before I decide. My mom's been with me on all three visits and she loves Minnesota. It's about about five hours to Iowa, two hours to Illinois and eight to Minnesota, so they're all kind of close. The biggest thing I'm looking at each one of these schools is the coaches. I want somebody that'll push me as I want to go to the next level. I need someone that's going to stay on me on grades and on the field things too. I also need that family environment as I want to find that home away from home too."
