Open Period Preview: Power Forward

Minnesota’s top target on the board is considered to be local product Race Thompson, a combo forward from nearby Robbinsdale, Minnesota. Race leads off, and pretty much is, our next Open Period Preview (Power Forward spot).

The Top Target.  This winter Race Thompson led Robbinsdale Armstrong with 20 points, nine boards, and four assists a game for an 18 win team.  Now he is with D1 Minnesota and after three events they are 11-2.  They made the quarters in Arkansas, won the Comets Shootout, were upset by 43 Hoops last weekend playing in their own event.

Race averaged nine points and eight boards over five games the first weekend, 8.8 points and 1.7 rebounds over six games in St. Cloud, and then with Matthew Hurt out last weekend he saw his team get upset by 43 Hoops.

Thompson is a high priority for Minnesota and the top competition seems to be Iowa State (Steve Prohm is meeting with Race tonight at his home).  There are other schools that are after Race but Minnesota, Iowa State, and Marquette seem the most interested right now.

Race is in Dallas this weekend playing on the Adidas Uprising tour.  Race has the shooting stroke and ball handling skills to play small forward as well.  And as you can see below, Minnesota really isn’t looking at many others because of Race and Daniel.

Don’t Forget!  Daniel Oturu can also play the power forward spot.  I expect him to play a lot of both in his career.  Daniel led off our preview of centers yesterday but we also need to include him here.  Why?  He’s agile enough to guard many power forwards, he’s still pretty thin, and his mid-range touch continues to grow.  Daniel is with Howard Pulley in Virginia this weekend.

Local Options.  This starts with Jarvis Thomas, the 6-foot-6 explosive four man from Orono (who was also at Hill-Murray, Tartan, and Bishop Gorman). Thomas has offers from Marquette, Iowa State, Oregon State, and Arizona State at this point.    Jarvis averaged 15.8 points and 10.2 rebounds a game this winter for the Spartans and he’s about a national top 250 recruit.  Minnesota watched him a couple times this winter and has seen him play numerous times in AAU.  Jarvis has switched from D1 Minnesota to Howard Pulley this year (was also recently with Minnesota Lockdown).

The only other local senior-to-be receiving regular division one interest on the hardwood is Brevyn-Spann Ford and he’s getting Gopher football interest (and is most likely to play college football).

Others.  As we said, because of Daniel being committed and Race being the top target the staff really isn’t recruiting anyone else for this spot.  They’ve watched Thomas but haven’t shown strong interest….

Six-foot-8 Jake Forrester of Pennsylvania has talked to Kimani Young in the past as he plays for the PSA Cardinals which is a team that Young watches commonly.  Forrester recently said he is hearing the most from Virginia, Notre Dame, Miami, UCONN, Stanford, and Kansas State.  Temple is where Jake’s dad played, he’s talked about taking a VCU visit, and in the past few weeks Seton Hall and Auburn have joined the race.  Notre Dame was in this week…

Nate Roberts is a 6-foot-9 power forward playing with Team Melo.  He seems like a guy Minnesota may look at based on his location and who he plays with but told us he’s hearing from Syracuse, UConn, Purdue, West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, Xavier, Providence, and Cal.

A couple other names to potentially watch are Valdir Manuel (likely should have put him with the centers) from New Jersey where he plays for The Patrick School and NJ Playaz (that is who both Jamir Harris played for and where Dupree McBrayer went to school, and both are Gophers), Jermaine Harris from Maryland, and Duncan DeMuth from Florida.
