"Minnesota is just the perfect school for me," Ohio wide receiver Jornell Manns said to GopherIllustrated. "I had a great relationship with Minnesota head coach PJ Fleck coming into the visit as he was like a best friend to me from all of our conversations on the phone, and then when I visited, that turned into a father figure as he wants the best for me, and that's a coach I want to play for. I actually wanted to commit to Minnesota when I got that offer initially, but I wanted to visit them and see for myself if this was a place I can envision myself at, and it truly was."
"On my Minnesota visit last week, I got to check out their facilities and talk a lot with their coaches too," Manns explained to GI. "I also got to go bowling with coach Fleck, and that was pretty cool. Not a lot of people know, but I'm on the bowling team at my high school and that's what I enjoy when I'm not playing football. I was actually named the MVP of my bowling team and I average around a 183, so that was something pretty cool to do on the visit. I also got to talk with my position coach, Matt Simon, and they want me as a slot receiver and that's what I want to be. He was telling me about what I'm already kind of more athletic than some of the guys that he's coaching as they tested out during the spring and they saw my results as well, so he wants me there. He said I'm already athletic enough, but he can help me mold my craft into something special."
"So as far as how my commitment went down, I went home after my Minnesota visit and had to discuss things with the people I trust and then we made the decision from there. A lot of kids in today's day and age get caught up in the recruiting process with all the media attention and all the people telling them how great they are, and that's great and everything, but I knew that once I found school that I fell in love with, there was no point in dragging it out anymore. I called coach Fleck that night after I visit and didn't want to tip him off, but eventually I told him I was going to commit to Minnesota, and he and coach Simon went crazy. I'd say the two biggest reasons why I wanted to be a Gopher were coach Fleck and Minnesota's academics are second to none. They give you so much support as a student-athlete there, and their academics are up there with Northwestern and Wisconsin as well. I also know at Minnesota that I can earn playing time right now and don't have to sit out and wait to play until I'm a junior. It's been made clear to me that the opportunity to play right away is there at Minnesota, and I plan on earning reps through a lot of hard work. I feel really good about my decision. Funny story about me and Brennan Armstrong too, is we've known each other since we were in third grade, and we were actually rivals from fourth to sixth grade. We were big rivals on the basketball court back then, so I've known him for a long time. He lives about ten minutes away from me now and we're in different conferences, but it's nice knowing he'll be my quarterback. Go Gophers!"
