Men's hockey names captains

Believe it or not, we're just a month away from the first Gopher men's hockey game. And when the puck drops for the first time this fall, three players will have additional letters on their sweaters.

Senior Grant Potulny once again will serve as captain for the Maroon and Gold. This will be his third straight year wearing the ‘C' and he becomes the first three-time captain since Allan Opsahl in 1944-47.

His assistants will be senior Troy Riddle and junior Keith Ballard.

Meanwhile, the Star Tribune reported that the Gophers men's golf team has escaped serious sanctions stemming from NCAA violations within the program.

University officials launched an investigation into the program after receiving an anonymous letter in December, purported to be from a former U of M golfer, detailing 10 alleged violations occurring under former head coach John Means.

The U found that four of the allegations had merit and imposed penalties and restrictions on those involved in the violations. In a letter dated Aug. 28, according to the Star Tribune, the NCAA enforcement committee ruled that the violations were considered secondary and warranted no further punishment.
