Kamani Johnson has a Gopher connection

Atlanta 6-foot-8, 200 pound forward Kamani Johnson ranks with the best in the EYBL as far as rebounds per minutes played. He also has a connection to the University of Minnesota.

Minnesota is one of several schools that have contacted the Southern Stampede forward who goes to Holy Spirit Prep in Atlanta.  Kamani Johnson has scored 6.7 points a game with 7.5 rebounds a contest.

“I hear the most from UCF, Florida Gulf Coast, Butler, UAB but have offer and interest from Minnesota, Georgetown, Memphis, Georgia Southern, Nebraska and Georgia Tech.

“I think the EYBL has just let other colleges see me and also get feedback from coaches on things I need to work on.”

There are many advantages to playing on a shoe circuit like the EYBL. The biggest? It’s making Johnson learn about himself, and the game every weekend.

“Playing in the EYBL is a great experience,” Johnson said.  “Your playing the best of the best from all around the country. So it gives you an insight on how college basketball is going to be.

“I wouldn't say there are any challenges to playing in the EYBL, there are guys who are going to have stronger parts to their game and your going to have stronger parts to your game it's just exposing their weaknesses.

“In the coming weeks hopefully we can make a run to go to the Peach Jam,” said Johnson.  “Also, in the coming months I want to take all the feedback and work on my game so I can make a big impact right away to whatever college I go to.”

Kamani is coming off a standout weekend in Indianapolis.

“This weekend, to find success, I think I rebound very well and played our defensive leader role pretty well doing all the little things like taking charges and stuff.

“On the offensive end I feel like I took advantages on the mismatches that I had but definitely could've been more aggressive.”

The Gophers are one of the teams that have called on Johnson as assistant Coach Kimani Young knows Kamani Johnson well.

“My namesake and one of my mom’s best friends coaches at Minnesota so I hear from them a little bit,” Johnson said. “They are an up and coming program that had an excellent season.”
