Montez has been one of the top scorers in the senior class this spring which has resulted in several teams and others joining Minnesota in pursuing Mathis.
The Latest...Has offers from USC, West Virginia, St. John's, Memphis, NC State, Virginia Tech, Marquette, Texas A&M, Missouri, VCU, and Xavier but it's Rutgers that has been after Mathis as hard as anyone as Montez recently took a visit to the school and spoke highly of his time with the coaching staff there....Kansas, Maryland, Oklahoma, and others are also talking to Mathis...
The Numbers...Montez is averaging 21 points per game playing with Immanuel Quickly on Team BBC. Taking 14 shots a game at the Adidas Uprising level Montez is shooting 43.6 percent from the floor. Mathis takes 4-5 threes a contest and is making nearly 38 percent of those. He's shooting about 74 percent from the foul line, averaging four boards a contest, and in on a pair of steals each game.
Minnesota...The Gophers offered Mathis over the winter but there hasn't been much talked about with Mathis and the Gopher since. Would Mathis work for the Gophers? Without a doubt. He's a top scorer right now in this class and he can produce in multiple ways. If the Gophers are connected with him in the coming months be excited about it but we've heard no steam lately on he and the Gophers.
The Video...You will notice that everything in the video is on the go. Transition threes, attacking scores over the top of defenders, transition basketball attacks into And1 attempts, etc. This is an attack first scoring minded wing....The release is quick and he loves to pull in transition on the wing....Has quick hops too as you will see at the end of the video....Great range on his jumper as well...Other videos show a player that is active in off ball movement...Great body control with the basketball lifting and finding ways to complete. A scorer...
What's Next...Most Adidas programs are competing in regional events around the country this weekend
The Verdict...Minnesota has been in contact with several wings and guys like Gabe Kalscheur, Eric Hunter, and Keyontae Johnson will soon visit. Mathis? Right now there doesn't seem to be much of a connection based on what we are hearing at GI and what Mathis has said in recent interviews. Talented kid who is going to be a strong college scorer but most of the action seems to be closer to his home area in Baltimore.
