Tommy Leavitt attracts Gopher attention

It's not hard to spot 6-4 Tommy Leavitt of Minneapolis (MN) Washburn on the gridiron. Not only is the Gopher football target the tallest player on the team, but he is on the field all the time as a tight end and defensive end. However, his versatility has made it so that he even admits that the Gopher coaches had told him that they don't know what position he'll play in college.

Tommy Leavitt, who weighs 220 pounds, told me after Washburn's 42-6 win over Minneapolis South that there are a lot of things to like about Minnesota.

"Their tight end is rated third in the country and they got the position going on. Getting a new stadium is a plus and the coaches have been great."

Leavitt is open to playing on both sides of the field and the Gopher coaches have told him that they look at him as a prospect as a tight end, defensive end and linebacker.

"I like both sides of the field, but I like offense a bit more."

Leavitt caught just two passes for 45 yards against South as the Millers used their ground game to control the clock. However, Leavitt said that he was not frustrated by the relative lack of action as a receiver.

"I just try to make the most of it. To help us win."

Leavitt attended the Iowa and Minnesota football camp this summer and is getting interest from Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Winona State, Northern Iowa and Macalester.

Minnesota is the only team to have offered him a scholarship so far. He attended the season opener against Tulsa and plans to go to some other home games.

Leavitt runs a 4.7 40-yard dash and bench presses 250 pounds. He said that he might run track this season to work on his speed and quickness. Leavitt has played basketball the past three years, but might bypass the hardwood this season.

Minnesota assistant head coach Moe Ankney is recruiting Leavitt for the Gophers. Ankney coaches the team's defensive ends, but Leavitt would seem to be more of a drop linebacker until he can add bulk to his frame.

Leavitt is an excellent student with a GPA of over 3.0 and he had a 27 on his ACT.
