6-4 Tommy Leavitt has committed to the Gophers

6-4 Tommy Leavitt of Minneapolis (MN) Washburn has committed to the Gophers, giving Minnesota their eighth verbal commitment for the 2004-05 season. Leavitt plays both tight end and defensive end for the Millers. Leavitt is Washburn's leading receiver with 14 catches for 200 yards. He has one touchdown reception. Leavitt has one interception on the defensive end of the field. Washburn is off to a 4-1 start.

Tommy Leavitt, who weighs 220 pounds, had told me recently that there are a lot of things to like about Minnesota.

"Their tight end is rated third in the country and they got the position going on. Getting a new stadium is a plus and the coaches have been great."

Leavitt is open to playing on both sides of the field and the Gophers coaches have told him that they look at him as a prospect as a tight end, defensive end and linebacker.

"I like both sides of the field, but I like offense a bit more."

Leavitt attended the Iowa and Minnesota football camps this summer and was getting interest from Iowa, Nebraska, Colorado, North Dakota, North Dakota State, Winona State, Northern Iowa and Macalester.

Minnesota was the first team to offer him a scholarship. He attended the season opener against Tulsa.

Leavitt runs a 4.7 40-yard dash and bench presses 250 pounds. He said that he might run track this season to work on his speed and quickness. Leavitt has played basketball the past three years, but might bypass the hardwood this season.

Leavitt is an excellent student with a GPA of over 3.0 and he had a 27 on his ACT.
