Roundup: VB sweeps Iowa

The Gophers started a long road trip Wednesday with their first Big Ten victory away from Minneapolis this year. Also, Minnesota and Michigan coaches speak about Friday's big football game.

Having lost their first two road matches this season at Indiana and Purdue, coach Mike Hebert's Gopher volleyball team knew its upcoming four-match road swing would be a strong test of the team's mettle.

Well, with one down and three to go, the Gophers are off to a flying start after beating Iowa 30-15, 30-27, 30-19 at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.

Minnesota (10-7, 3-2) couldn't afford another road loss, especially to a second-tier Big Ten team such as Iowa (5-10, 0-5), and with upcoming matches at Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State before they see their home fans again, a win Wednesday night was even more crucial.

Senior tri-captain Casse Busse of Prior Lake led the way with 15 kills and five blocks, and Iowa native Erin Martin came up big in her home state with 12 kills.

The Gophers' next match is at 2 p.m. Sunday at Madison against the Badgers. It will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net.

Mason, Carr talk about game: Gophers football coach Glen Mason and Michigan coach Lloyd Carr held news conferences earlier this week to discuss Friday's big tilt between the Gophers and Wolverines.

Check back with later today to see what the rivals had to say about the battle for the Little Brown Jug.
