Gopher recruits in action on Friday

Three future Gophers will hit the field Friday night, trying to help their teams win their section finals in the state football playoffs. Check out who's playing where as the brackets are pared to eight in each class.

Section 6AAAA, Hutchinson at Orono, Friday, 7 p.m.
The 6-3 Hutchinson Tigers are coming off an impressive 28-6 win over Shakopee that saw the return of Gophers recruit Tony Mortensen. The 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback, who made an oral commitment to Minnesota in September, missed four games with a sprained left knee but came back to direct the victory over the Sabres last weekend.

Mortensen completed 8 of 10 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown against Shakopee. He'll be joined by 6-foot-8, 320-pound offensive lineman Lydon Murtha, who committed to the Gophers last spring, as Hutchinson tries to advance to the final eight in the state's second-largest class.

Section 6AAAAA, Wayzata at Robbinsdale Armstrong, Friday, 7 p.m.
The 8-2 Wayzata Trojans might be peaking at just the right time, as they prepare to face Classic Lake Conference champion Armstrong on Friday. They reached the section final by whipping Maple Grove 35-7, as future Gopher Dominique Barber posted his best game of the season.

The 6-foot, 190-pound running back rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns on 23 carries in the section semifinals. Barber, who committed to Minnesota in September, is the younger brother of Gopher running back Marion Barber III and the son of former Gopher legend Marion Barber Jr.

The Trojans are trying to avenge a 21-20 loss at Armstrong on Oct. 10 that cost them a share of the Classic Lake title.
