Gophers open season versus Concordia-St. Paul

The Gopher men's basketball team will start the 2003-04 season with an exhibition game tonight at Williams Arena versus Division II Concordia-St. Paul. The Gophers are expected to start an All-Minnesota squad of guards Adam Boone, Moe Hargrow and Johnson with forwards Michael Bauer and Kris Humphries. The Gophers will face a Golden Bear team under first-year head coach Ryan Freeberg.

The Golden Bears finished just 4-24 last season, beating Minnesota-Morris and Minnesota-Crookston twice. Concordia-St. Paul made the Northern Sun Conference Tournament in its first year of eligibility. They return three starters from last year's team, all juniors, guard Brian Jamros (Moose Lake, MN), forward Justin Vandenberg (Appleton, WI), and 6-5 point guard David Albo (Leavenworth, KS). The three are team captains.

Jamros is the team's leading returning scorer with 11.1 points per game. He made 46 three-pointers last season, second on the team to junior guard Dan Torrez (Green Bay, WI) who hit 67 from behind the arc. Vanderburg averaged 9.7 points per game and Albo scored 7.4 point per contest.

Senior forward Ray Dawson (Roseville, MN) and sophomore center Aaron Ackerson (Clive, IA) also return.
