Gophers Volleyball Team Drops to No. 24 in Polls

The Minnesota volleyball team dropped four spots in the USA Today/AVCA Top 25 poll to No. 24 on Monday. Minnesota had its 10-match Big Ten winning streak snapped on Friday in a five-game loss at the hands of Illinois. The Gophers then dropped a three-game decision at Northwestern on Saturday. The Gophers currently sit in a three-way tie for second place in the Big Ten with No. 23 Wisconsin and No. 25 Illinois at 10-4. Minnesota will return home to face Purdue on Friday at 7 p.m. The Golden Gophers will also take on Indiana on Saturday at 7 p.m.

Men's Hockey Out of Polls

The two-time defending national champion Minnesota Gophers men's hockey team has dropped out of the top 15 in polls released Monday by USA Today/American Hockey Magazine and U.S. College Hockey Online. It's the first time the Gophers have been unranked since the conclusion of the 1999-2000 season, when the team finished 20-19-2. The Gophers started this season ranked No. 1 in both polls.

Gophers Women Pucksters Back From Four Nation's Cup

The good news is that the United States won the Gold Medal in the Four Nations cup in Svode, Sweden last weekend. The better news is that Gophers Natalie Darwitz, Kelly Stephens, Lyndsay Wall and Krissy Wendell all returned uninjured and ready for the rest of the season with coach Laura Halldorson and the rest of the team.

The U.S. Select Team won the gold medal, 2-1 over Team Canada in dramatic fashion. Cammi Granato scored the game-winner in a shootout attempt, helping USA to its first gold-medal win since 1997.

The U.S. Select Team went undefeated in the four-day tournament. Team USA defeated Finland, 8-0 (Nov. 5), shut out Canada 2-0 (Nov. 6) and defeated Sweden, 5-1 (Nov. 8), paving the way to the gold-medal game.

Individually, Wendell led the foursome with two goals and two assists. Darwitz followed with two goals, one of which was unassisted, and an assist. Wall had two assists, while Stephens tacked on a single assist.

The four return to collegiate competition this weekend when the Gophers face the Brown Bears in non-conference action. The two teams start the series, Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Meehan Auditorium in Providence, R.I.

Gopher Football Game Against Iowa Moved From ESPN2 To ESPN

The University of Minnesota-Iowa football game scheduled for 11 a.m., this Saturday, Nov. 15 at Kinnick Stadium in Iowa City, has been moved from ESPN2 to ESPN. The game will be broadcast by Mark Jones (play-by-play), Bob Davie (analyst) and Holly Rowe (sideline).

The Minnesota men's cross country team heads into the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships on Saturday hoping to secure their seventh straight berth in the NCAA Championships. Oklahoma State is hosting the meet on the OSU Course. The men's race begins at 11 a.m. ... The Minnesota women's cross country team travels to Stillwater, Okla., on Saturday to compete in the NCAA Midwest Regional Cross Country Championships. The 6-kilometer women's race will begin at 12 noon, following the men's race. Oklahoma State plays host to the NCAA Midwest Region Championships, whose field contains 29 schools from the states of Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. … The University of Minnesota baseball team announced its schedule for the 2004 season on Monday. Minnesota will take on six teams from last year's final Baseball America Top 25 poll, four teams that advanced to the Super Regionals in 2003 and two College World Series participants from last season.
