Hoops: Men win, both ink recruits

Wednesday was a big day for the Williams Arena crew. Dan Monson's men won their final preseason tuneup and inked three prep seniors, while Pam Borton got four future Gophers to sign on the dotted line.

Dan Monson and Co. start their season Monday night with a home game against Missouri-Kansas City in the first round of the Preseason NIT. Last night, they finished their preseason schedule 2-0 with an 84-71 win over the Howard Pulley Panthers, a collection of local former college players who have been touring the Midwest playing college teams.

Ben Johnson and Adam Boone each scored 19 points on 12 of 20 shooting to lead the Gophers, while Kris Humphries posted his second straight double-double with 12 points and 12 boards. Michael Bauer (11) and Stan Gaines (10) also hit double figures in scoring for Minnesota.

Former Minneapolis Roosevelt HS star BeeBop Walker led the Panthers with 20 points.

Monson lands three: On national signing day, the Gophers men's team received official commitments from three players who had given their word they were coming to Dinkytown earlier this year.

Chaska forward Spencer Tollackson, a 6-foot-9, 250-pound bruiser, and Park Center HS guard Miles Webb (6-3, 180) are the two local recruits headed to Minneapolis, while highly regarded point guard Enrico Tucker (6-0, 180) from San Diego was Monson's top national recruit.

Borton signs four: On the women's side, coach Pam Borton looked east, west and just across town to land four prep seniors who will start their Gophers careers next fall.

The four newest future Gophers are Brittney Davis, a point guard from Portland, Ore.; Leslie Knight, a 6-foot forward from Hopkins HS; Lauren Lacey, a 6-3 post player from Marian Catholic HS in suburban Chicago; and Natasha Williams, a 6-3 forward from Niles North HS in Skokie, Ill.
