Maroney named Big Ten Freshman of the Year

True freshman running back Laurence Maroney was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year on both teams, sharing the award with Michigan receiver Steve Breaston on the coaches' team.

Laurence Maroney finished with 990 yards rushing and nine touchdowns in 2003. His 6.73-yard average per carry is the second-highest single-season average in school history. This marks the first time a Gopher has earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors since Darrell Thompson won the award in 1986. Maroney also received honorable-mention recognition on both teams.
