Gophers defeat Washington to advance to Final Four

The 13th-seeded Minnesota Gophers (26-10) defeated the 12th-seeded Washington volleyball team (23-9) 3-2 during the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championships at the Pyramid at Long Beach State. The Golden Gophers will advance to their first ever NCAA Final Four to be held in Dallas. The match marked just the second time in school history that Washington has advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals.

After grabbing the early lead in the match, Washington was forced to rally from a 2-1 deficit to force the deciding fifth game. The Huskies took the first game 30-19 and then saw the Golden Gophers take two close-fought games, 32-30 and 33-31. Washington rallied to even the match by winning game four, 30-27. Minnesota won game five by a 15-9 score. In other regional action, Florida beat Penn State 3-0 and top-seeded USC downed UCLA 3-1. Georgia Tech and Hawaii play tonight in Hawaii to decide the fourth team for the NCAA championships.
