Minnesota-Texas Tech BB preview

The Gophers get a chance to bounce back from a disappointing 77-60 loss to Nebraska suffered at home on Monday when they face the Texas Tech Red Raiders (10-2) in the O'Reilly New Year's Ball at the United Spirit Arena at 1:30 p.m on ESPN. The afternoon's match-up marks the fifth meeting between the two squads. Tech leads the series 3-1.

The series began on December 27, 1980, as the Golden Gophers won at home, 72-56. The Raiders have won the last three meetings. On December 30, 2001, the Raiders downed the Gophers 80-60 at the United Spirit Arena. Last season the Raiders defeated the Gophers at Williams Arena 99-89, in overtime, on December 28. The teams met for the second time last season in the consolation game of the NIT in Madison Square Garden on April 3. Texas Tech won by 10 points, 71-61.

The New Year's Day game is televised on ESPN. Dave Pasch will call the play-by-play. Bill Raftery and Jay Bilas will provide the color analysis.

The Red Raiders defeated Big ten rival Iowa 65-59 in their last game.

All-American candidate Andre Emmett has 1,812 career points and is now fourth on the Texas Tech all-time scoring list. Andre scored 23 points against Iowa at the American Airlines Center in Dallas on December 22 and was selected as the Big 12 Player of the Week. He is the lone double-figure scorer, averaging 21.4 points per game. Emmett puts his name into last year's NBA Draft, but decided to return for his senior season.

Texas Tech has good depth and will likely go 10 deep. Ten different players have started at least one game. Texas Tech is not a strong outside shooting team, as they have made just 41 three-pointers in 12 games.
