The Minnesota wrestling team improved to 3-1 with a 43-4 win over Division II Portland Sate Sunday at the Sports Pavilion.
The Gophers won nine of 10 matches, including four by pin, three by major decisions and one by technical fall.
"Coming off the big win against Nebraska, the last thing you want is a letdown," said 197 pounder Damion Hahn. "We came out and wrestled hard and it was good to see the new guys in the lineup contribute. This was a good way to finish the week and now we can focus on the National Duals."
Sophomore Andrew Domingues got Minnesota started with a 5-3 decision against Zac Enoch at 125 pounds. It was the third win in a row for Domingues who was in the lineup for All-American Bobbe Lowe.
Quincy Osborn followed with a 29-14 technical fall against Lucas Hambleton at 133. Redshirt freshman Danny Williams made his first career start and posted a 15-4 major decision against Josh Carroll at 141.
Portland State got its lone victory at 149 as Eddie Dahlen defeated Keri Stanley, 16-5. Thomas McAlpine got the Golden Gophers back on track with a 15-6 major decision against Kainoa Casco at 157 pounds.
Following intermission, Minnesota posted four consecutive pins to put the match out of reach. Two-time All-American Jacob Volkmann earned his
team-best ninth pin of the season over Josh Gustafson at 2:41.
Junior Casey Flaherty made his first start of the season at 174 pounds and collected his first pin against Devin Mair at 4:30. Junior Josh McLay followed at 184 with a pin of Nick Gomeza at 2:28.
Hahn, the defending NCAA 197-pound champion who is ranked No. 1 in the nation by TheWrestlingMall.com, rounded out the pin parade with a victory over Allen Kennett at 2:30. The three-time All-American improved his record to 14-1.
Redshirt freshman Cole Konrad closed out the match with a 14-4 major decision against Eric Mustoe at heavyweight.
The Gophers will next compete at the National Duals at Cleveland State University Jan. 16-17.
