K Jason Giannini commits to Gophers

Kicker Jason Giannini of Canton (OH) GlenOak has committed to Minnesota. Giannini was a first-team All-Ohio selection. He won the kicking contest at the annual Canton Repository Pro Football Hall of Fame East-West All-Star Football Game at Fawcett Stadium. GlenOak finished 6-4 and tied for second place in the Federal League.

Jason Giannini scored 59 points and was made 12 of 18 of field goal attempts, twice hitting 49-yarders. Five of his misses were beyond 45 yards and three were 50 yards or longer. He made four of six kicks from 41 to 50 yards. Giannini also made 23 of 25 extra points and 37 of his 46 kickoffs were touchbacks.

Giannini was also named to the 2003 Northeast Inland All-District football team, the All-Canton Repository Stark County team.

Giannini is a high school teammate of Nick Smith, who was recruited by Minnesota, but committed to Big Ten rival Michigan State.

Giannini is the 24th player to commit to Minnesota. He committed shortly after the Gophers lost their top kicker on their list, Taylor Mehlhaff to Wisconsin earlier last week.
