Women's BB recruit Lauren Lacey having strong year

Lauren Lacey of Chicago Heights (IL) Marian Catholic was one of four Minnesota girl's basketball signees during the early signing period. Lacey is a 6-3 forward/center, who is a two-time all-state pick by both the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun Times. She was honored as Illinois Basketball Coaches Association (IBCA) All-State First Team last year, and was a third-team selection as a sophomore.

Lauren Lacey entered her senior season with 1,118 career points, as she averaged 14.3 points per game as a sophomore and 16.1 points per game as a junior. Lacey helped Marian Catholic to a 29-4 record a year ago and a 31-2 mark and a state runner-up finish in 2001-02. A 2003 Street & Smith Honorable Mention All-American, Lacey competed on the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival North Team. She is ranked as the #66 senior by the Blue Star Index.

Lauren Lacey has led Marian Catholic to a 19-4 mark, although the Spartans have lost three of their last four games. They fell to East Suburban Catholic rival Benet Academy 73-67 in overtime Wednesday, despite Lacey finishing with 17 points, nine rebounds and two steals.

The Spartans started the season 14-0 before losing to St. Louis St. Joseph Academy 64-48. They rebounded to win four straight before falling to nationally ranked Pickerington (OH) North 83-42.

They also lost a close game to conference foe Joliet Catholic 56-53 and face Illiana Christian tonight.

The Spartans are ranked #1 by Illinois Times, #2 by Star Newspapers and the Daily Southtown, #6 in the AP State Poll and eighth by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Sun-Times.

Lacey is expected to give the Gophers some much-needed depth and size next season, and head coach Pam Borton thinks Lacey will be an excellent addition for the Gophers.

"Lauren brings tremendous skill and versatility to our post game," said Borton. "She makes running the floor a priority and will fit well into our transition game."
