Gopher grapplers fall to Wisconsin 17-16

Wrestling head coach Barry Davis earned his 100th win in movie-like fashion as his No. 13 Badgers defeated No. 12 Minnesota 17-16 on the road. It was the Badgers' first win over the Gophers (7-5 overall, 1-2 Big Ten) in seven years and their first victory at Minnesota since the 1990-91 season.

Wisconsin (15-2, 2-0) won six of 10 matches and hung on at the end to pull out the victory. Sophomores Tom Clum (125 pounds), Ed Gutnik (133) and Tony Turner (149) each took important decisions and Kelly Flaherty (165) earned a crucial victory over his older brother Casey to give Wisconsin a late lead.

The Badgers trailed 7-3 before Clum and Gutnik earned three team points apiece. After Minnesota retook the lead, 10-9, Tony Turner put the Badgers up 12-10 with his 6-4 decision over freshman Jeremy Anderson. Minnesota again snagged an advantage when sophomore Matt Nigel took a 7-3 decision from freshman Tyler Turner to make it 13-12.

Kelly Flaherty, though, dominated his older brother, junior Casey Flaherty, and earned a technical fall for five decisive points. Minnesota junior Jon Duncombe beat senior Ralph DeNisco in the evening's closing match, but the 7-4 decision was not enough to overcome Wisconsin's lead.

With the win, Davis' record at Wisconsin is 100-81-6 overall.
