A day after upsetting third-ranked Illinois, the Golden Gopher wrestling team (9-6, 3-3) routed Indiana, 32-7, on Saturday night in Bloomington, Ind. Minnesota won eight of 10 matches to move back to .500 in the Big Ten.
Friday night the Gophers, ignited by a pin from Jon Duncombe at 174, upset Illinois 17-16.
The Gophers got a boost from the return of All-American Jacob Volkmann, who solidified the 165-pound weight class, which had been a weak spot in Volkmann's absence. Volkmann missed almost a month with a broken eye socket suffered in practice.
"Having Jacob (Volkmann) back in the lineup was a big boost for us tonight," head coach J Robinson said after the win Friday. "To get a pin in the final minute of a match like Jon (Duncombe) did against a great opponent was the key to the victory. We've lost some close matches this year because of bonus points, so it was nice to get one of those for ourselves."
"To come back like this after losing two at home last week says a lot about what this team is capable of," said defending 197-pound national champion Damion Hahn. "People say we're young or this is a rebuilding year, but we don't look at it like that. We expect to go out and compete with the top teams in the country and we did that tonight."
The Gophers are off until Feb. 15 when they host Big Ten rival Iowa at 2 p.m. at Williams Arena.
