Gopher women BB team beats Northwestern 68-47

The Minnesota women's basketball team, ranked #18 in the country, defeated Northwestern, 68-47, in the first round of the Big Ten Women's Basketball Tournament at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis on Thursday. The Golden Gophers, 21-7 overall, advance to Friday's quarterfinals where they will face #22 Ohio State.

The Gophers outrebounded the Wildcats 51-25 as two players had double-doubles. Junior center Janel McCarville, who was named first-team All-Big Ten by the coaches, led the Gophers with 15 points and had 11 rebounds for her third consecutive double-double (12th of the season). Kadidja Andersson broke out of a slump as she had her third career double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman guard/forward Jamie Broback finished with nine points and 10 rebounds.

Minnesota shot just 36.4 percent in the first half, but had 12 offensive rebounds to build a 27-19 halftime lead as Northwestern made only three field goals in 19 attempts (15.8 percent).

Friday's game with Ohio State will be televised live on Fox Sports Chicago and on a tape-delayed basis, after the Minnesota men's hockey game, on Fox Sports Net North.
