Gopher assistant Mike Peterson gets Wake WBB job

Gophers men's basketball associate head coach Mike Petersen has been hired as the Wake Forest head women's basketball coach. Petersen has been head coach Dan Monson's top assistant for the past five seasons after serving as a women's head coach at Texas Christian, Gonzaga and New Mexico State. Petersen handled much of the Gophers' game preparation and coordinated the team's individual work and was viewed as the Gophers' X and 0 guy.

Petersen has a 188-137 record in 11 seasons. Wake Forest has finished just 67-129 over the past seven seasons and was last in the ACC this season with a 4-12 record.

Barbara Walker, who is the sister of Gophers assistant coach Bill Walker, is Wake Forest's senior women's athletic administrator. Barbara Walker and Petersen were employed at Oregon at the same time in the early 1990s.

"He is an excellent coach, and he is the type of person that we would be very interested in for our program," Walker told the Winston-Salem Journal. "He's the profile we're looking for. He's someone who has been a head coach and has had success at programs that have struggled."
