Scout Report: Paul Nixon

As current Gophers continue their spring practices, a handful of former Gophers are hoping to get drafted later this month. Linebacker Paul Nixon is the third to be analyzed by the NFL draft experts at TFY Draft Preview in our series looking at former University of Minnesota players hoping to catch on with an NFL team.

Untitled Document Name: Paul Nixon School Minnesota Year 5Sr
Ht: 6-1 Wt: 234 40: 4.78 Pos: OLB

Bio: Totaled 19/4/1.5 as a senior after 35/8/6 the prior year.

Pos: Quick, explosive defender with poor size/speed numbers for the next level. Agile, plays low to the ground with excellent leverage and makes plays in every direction of the field. Displays footwork and the ability to slide laterally. Fast off the corner, yet effective dropping into coverage.

Neg: Lacks the great first step off the snap when lined up in a three point stance as well as a sustained burst of speed. Easily handled at the point or knocked off balance.

Analysis: A defender that flashes on the scene, Nixon has linebacker size yet lineman's speed. Not fast enough to play weakside linebacker position nor large enough to be used on the strong side, he could back up in a three-four alignment if given the opportunity.
