Gaines will transfer

There had been plenty of talk about Minnesota sophomore forward Stanley Gaines leaving the program early in the 2003-04 season, but we've confirmed this afternoon that the defensive stopper will transfer.

Stanley Gaines met with head coach Dan Monson for 45 minutes on Tuesday, and coach and player met again today. has confirmed that the team's top defensive player from the 2003-2004 season will be transferring.

The Gophers already lost Kris Humphries, who turned pro, and graduating seniors Michael Bauer and Ben Johnson, who combined for 41.3 points and 17.7 rebounds. They also lost redshirt freshman Aliou Kane, who averaged just 0.6 points and 0.5 rebounds and walk-on Matt Smriga, who announced that he will not use his fifth year of eligibility, focusing instead on his academics.

The Gophers also lost Maurice Hargrow, who left the program midseason. He transferred to Arkansas, where he will be eligible after sitting out the first seven games of the season.

The Gophers finished just 12-18 last season, winning only three Big Ten games.

Gaines is believed to be seeking a playing home closer to his Chicago roots, with DePaul as one possibility.
