Gaines reaction

Another player has left the Gophers men's basketball program early, and key figures weighed in on the transfer.

Forward Stan Gaines, who would have been a junior next fall, became the latest player to leave coach Dan Monson's program when he confirmed Wednesday that he would transfer to another school.

Gaines made 17 starts last year, scoring 5.5 points per game and showing promise as a big man with the ability to play on the perimeter as well.

In Thursday's edition of the Star Tribune, Minnesota AD Joel Maturi sat down with Jeff Shelman to discuss the transfer and his thoughts on Monson's program. One quote that could raise a few eyebrows: "Dan is responsible for the people he brings in here and recruits here. We can't live this way."

Monson also gives his thoughts in Shelman's article; the gist is that he wanted to keep Gaines around but if Gaines wasn't going to buy into the system, it's better for all involved if he leaves.

Strib columnist Patrick Reusse also offers his take, in his own inimitable style. See what Patrick thinks about Gaines and why this loss – though not a big one – still hurts Monson's chances of rebuilding the Gophers.
